Reclaim The Enlightenment presents an Alternative Burns Night | The Deer's Head

Reclaim The Enlightenment presents an Alternative Burns Night in Belfast, a celebration of the immense popularity of Rabbie Burns in Ulster. The event will take place at The Deer's Head, located at 1-3 Lower Garfield Street, Belfast, BT1 1FP, on January 25, 2024. Rabbie Burns holds a special place in the hearts of Ulster due to being first published outside Scotland in this region. His language resonated with the discontented masses, and many weaver poets in Ulster sought to imitate him, including Samuel Thompson, known as 'The Bard of Carngranny.' Thompson even visited Burns and tried to gain his support for the United Irish newspaper, the Northern Star. While the Scottish radical movement was crushed in the late 18th century, Ulster's United Irish cause gained momentum. Burns, facing threats to his position as a customs officer and declining health, joined the Dumfries Volunteers, a government militia. He wrote them a loyal ballad, which shocked his admirers in Ulster, prompting a satirical response from Samuel Thompson. This 'alternative' Burns night will celebrate his radicalism through song, music, and new writing from Alan Millar, last year's winner of the Linen Hall Library Ulster Scots prize, and Angeline King, the University of Ulster writer in residence. The night will feature a traditional dinner of Haggis, available at a cost of £20 per person.
