From Spellow to Southport...with Love | The Isla Gladstone Conservatory
May 28, 2025 (UTC+1)
Anfield
‘From Spellow to Southport…with Love’ is a day for all families, young people and children, featuring three of the UK’s best, and best-loved poets, lyricists and performers, Michael Rosen, Jackie Kay and Jordan Stephens, full of fun, creative activities to promote and celebrate the power of community, unity, diversity and resilience. The tragic murders of the young girls in Southport, and the racist riots that followed, which led to Spellow Library suffering major fire damage, sent shockwaves through communities across the region. Beloved children’s poet Michael Rosen, the inimitable Jackie Kay, and Rizzles Kicks' Jordan Stephens for a one-off, unforgettable day of performances, storytelling, and poetry in the iconic Isla Gladstone Conservatory in Stanley Park. There will be creative activities for all ages, an opportunity for you to write your own messages of love and unity on postcards, and to connect and share your experiences with people in your community. Writing on the Wall, Michael Rosen, Jackie Kay and Jordan Stephens believe in the power of creativity to both inspire and unite. You too can play your part, hear some amazing performances, and have a lot of fun on the day too. The library maybe repaired but the community still requires help to heal. In the face of difficult times, this is a space to celebrate and embrace the diversity that makes our communities strong. Let’s come together and send love from Spellow to Southport.
Michael Rosen
is one of Britain’s best-loved children’s poets and authors. Born in 1946, he grew up in a family passionate about education, storytelling, and humour, all of which have shaped his career. With a deep love for language, he has written numerous poetry collections, picture books, and educational works, including the classic We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Beyond writing, Michael is a dynamic performer, bringing his poetry to life in schools, libraries, and festivals. He has also worked in broadcasting, notably presenting BBC Radio 4’s Word of Mouth, exploring language and communication. As Professor of Children’s Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London, he continues to inspire educators and young readers alike. With his trademark wit and warmth, Michael Rosen remains a champion of creativity, literacy, and the joy of words.
Jordan Stephens
is a writer, performer, and mental health advocate, best known as one half of the chart-topping duo Rizzle Kicks, who sold over a million records. Beyond music, Jordan has made a significant impact in raising awareness around mental health, drawing from his own experiences to challenge stigma. His campaign #IAMWHOLE reached over 120 million people online and was even mentioned in the Houses of Parliament. As a children’s author, Jordan brings his creativity and passion for storytelling to young readers. His book The Missing Piece was recently shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Prize. Whether through music, writing, or advocacy, Jordan Stephens continues to inspire with his commitment to self-expression, inclusivity, and mental well-being.
Jackie Kay
is a celebrated poet, playwright, and novelist whose work explores themes of identity, belonging, and imagination. Known for her ability to shift between voices, she brings a dynamic, rhythmic quality to her writing, often infused with her Glasgow accent. Born in Scotland to a Scottish mother and a Nigerian father, Jackie was adopted by white parents and grew up in Glasgow in a family deeply involved in politics and social justice. She began writing poetry at the age of 12, focusing on issues she saw in the world. Her love for drama and performance shaped her approach to poetry, drawing inspiration from Burns Night recitations and spoken-word events in Glasgow. She discovered that poetry could be written in everyday language and performed in an engaging, dramatic way. Beyond poetry, Jackie Kay is an accomplished writer of plays, novels, and short stories, further showcasing her talent for storytelling across different forms.

FAQ's:
Q: Will I see / be taught by Alexander Peck?
A: Alex teaches one of the larger groups live on this day, but we also use a number of other equally knowledgeable trainers who follow the same syllabus created by him.
Q: Where should I book accommodation?
A:
All venues will be close to Liverpool city centre.
Q: Is parking available at the venue/s?
A:
Yes, all venues are close to public car parking (however, local costs may apply).
Q: Why multiple venues?
A:
Due to the high popularity of the training and wide range of professions attending, groups are split into similar professions - NHS Radiography, Dentistry, Veterinarian, Suppliers etc.). With limited room choices in smaller training centres, venues are allocated dependent on group sizes, each with their own trainer. Groups are allocated around two weeks prior to the session - please await an email around this time to the address registered with Eventbrite (all correspondence is routed through the Eventbrite system).
Q: Is it possible to live-stream abroad?
A:
Yes, we can route the live-stream internationally, either live or delayed for timezone requirements. Please note this is not Teams / Zoom screen sharing, it requires a full AV team in the remote room for talkback which we will arrange.
Q: Is this session suitable for supplier / vendor staff to attend for personal CPD?
A:
Yes, supplier staff are welcome at the same price. We can also live-stream to a private 'all company' room if you have 5+ attendees from the same team / division / company. Contact us directly for this option as costs vary depending on venue and spaces available. Our trainers use talkback earpieces to interact with all groups in the same way as the 'live' audience.
Q: Is lunch included?
A:
Some sessions include a restaurant lunch provided by our training supporters (for NHS staff). We don't know for sure until nearer the time (logistics around this are tricky!). Please see your venue information email for details nearer the time.
