FALLOWFIELD Official Cinema Premiere | HOME Manchester
May 17, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Manchester
You've never seen a student film like this before.
Abel, a troubled young woman haunted by the death of her younger sister, stumbles upon a mysterious new drug going by the same name as her hometown - FALLOWFIELD
From it's initial conception late 2023 to wrapping production in early 2025, this project has come a long way. From being a 2 minute demo film now evolved into a mindbending 1 hour feature on a shoestring budget that has pushed it's storytelling and creative boundaries in all aspects of production.
With incredibly talented young actors, an insanely talented composer and with the backing of Manchester Students Group, this is the start of something truly exciting from a student film on a tiny budget. If you're a Fallowfield resident, uni student or young person living in Manchester looking for bold, new projects to entertain and provoke you, this film is for you!

The Absolute Beginners' Guide to Urban Sketching (in Chorlton) | Benito Lounge
May 17, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Chorlton-cum-Hardy
I've organised this event to tie in with the Chorlton Arts Festival. It's a gentle step-by-step approach to putting pen to paper and building up the courage to go out there and capture Chorlton in sketches. You’ll soon be hooked.
The workshop starts with a short presentation on what urban sketching is all about and a preview of the day’s activities.
You’ll overcome your fear of drawing outside and build up some techniques that will set you on the road to becoming an urban sketcher.
We’ll meet at the Benito Lounge on Wilbraham Road. I'll be there from 9.30ish for a 10am start. After 40 minutes or so it'll be out on the streets for the rest of the day.
Bring your own materials. A pen and small sketchbook is all you need. If you have some watercolours that would be good. Something to sit on – a camping stool or similar – is a must.
Cancellation Policy. If there is a waiting list and I can fill your place with someone else there will be no charge for cancelling. If there is no waiting list then: You can cancel upto four weeks before the event then no charge; two weeks before then a 50% refund; after that no refunds, sorry.
It’s weather dependent. If it looks like a total washout then I’ll cancel the event and refund your ticket price, although not the Eventbrite booking fee, I’m afraid. I’ll let you know a few days before.
The £45 ticket price will have a small Eventbrite fee added.
If you'll struggle with this fee, please email me, I can offer a couple of pay-what-you-can-afford places. len@lengrant.co.uk.

Having studied and built her musical foundation in Manchester, she now resides in London, where she continues her inquisitive and collaborative creative journey.

Loosely connected to the world of jazz, but realistically inhabiting her own realm
” (Clash Magazine), her creative output is an intricate tapestry of influences and exploration, finding home in the peripheries of the contemporary classical, jazz, art-pop, and folk worlds – “
all propelled with a voice of velvet suppleness and gutsy emotional intensity

In 2000, mjf commissioned and premiered its first ever new work:
New Futures
, written by composer, trumpeter and mainstay of the local scene Richard Iles. 25 years later, to help celebrate mjf’s 30th festival edition, we've re-commissioned Richard to revisit and re-develop his concept for the piece, now featuring some ex-students who’ve since benefitted from his expert tuition alongside players from the original line-up.
Performed by The Miniature Brass Emporium, his fifteen-piece ensemble that combines elements of funk, soul, and contemporary jazz, the sound is versatile and dynamic, showcasing a range of moods, from roaring ensembles to sensitive and impressionist pieces.
“...
expect ensemble writing and playing of the highest order, with colourful orchestrations and textures combining with improvisation from both the younger and the more est
ablished generation of the North-West's performers.
” That’s how the mjf 2000 brochure anticipated the premiere at what was then The Green Room – now Gorilla.
Over the years, Richard has written music to feature virtuoso saxophone players Iain Ballamy, Andy Schofield and Iain Dixon – all of which have been premiered at previous Manchester Jazz Festivals. Initially the band was all brass, but is now expanded to include saxophones, broadening the sound palette and increasing the possibilities for Richard’s compositional style.
As a member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra, Richard performed with notable musicians Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, Anthony Braxton, Vince Mendoza, Peter Erskine, and Bill Frisell. As a member of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra directed by Tommy Smith, he accompanied jazz legends Joe Lovano, Kurt Elling, John Scofield, and Gary Burton. All this has had a huge effect on his compositional style and approach to building a jazz ensemble.
The current iteration of The Miniature Brass Emporium is an invigorating balance of both young and older players. His student alumni are fast-rising players already forging their own careers, and Richard’s long-time colleagues Mike Walker, Les Chisnall, Eryl Roberts, Tim France and Pete Turner are all stalwarts of the Manchester and national jazz scene.
mjf gratefully acknowledges the support of PRS Foundation and Granada Foundation towards the creation of this project – also, fittingly, the two funders of the original commission in 2020.

Stephe is a contemporary storyteller, creating and sharing intelligent, irreverent spoken word shows with audiences across the UK, and beyond. She’s also fascinated by storytelling’s potential to help promote a positive sense of belonging, and a spirit of creative citizenship, across a range of communities and contexts. Raised in the back of a Ford Cortina somewhere between England and Scotland, Stephe especially loves telling Scottish and English fairytales, the fiery folklore of the Anglo-Scottish Borders, and salvaged stories from the two kingdoms’ historic and mythic pasts.
