The 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale | SeMA - Seoul Museum of Art
Aug 26–Nov 30, 2025 (UTC+9)
Seoul
The Seoul Museum of Art has announced the three artistic directors of the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, which will be held from August 26 to November 30 next year. They are artist and filmmaker Anton Vidokle, curator and art historian Hallie Ayres, and film curator Lukas Brasiskis. The three were selected from 66 international open calls for applications. They proposed the concept of "exhibition-as-séance" and aim to "break away from the concept of biennials under contemporary neoliberalism and construct an enhanced experience where awakened life and the intertwined world of the superhuman arena". They point out that "these ideas are related to some important contemporary discourses, from feminism to indigenous struggles, from anti-capitalism to postcolonialism", and they plan to use "the aesthetics of spiritualism and animism to critically intervene in dominant discourses such as capitalism, materialism, postcolonialism and contemporary technology".

Artistic practice is inherently tied to the movement of “position”—both in terms of its displacement and the velocity of that shift—in the act of representing nature. Yet, when all positions are already occupied, and the occupied ones merely switch places at high speeds, art risks being reduced to the mere function of a medium. This monopolization of positionality has historically and socially solidified into dominant structures where only flashy accelerations draw attention. Within such a framework, artistic activity starts to resemble a reckless race.

Su Dongpo, a great writer and painter in the Song Dynasty of China, once said that the true meaning of painting lies not in the faithful imitation of the object, but in the freehand brushwork - that is, expressing the feelings of the literati. Compared with Western abstract painting, which went through a specific art history process from the late 19th century to the early 20th century and finally appeared as a combination of formal elements and individual subjectivity; East Asian painting is rooted in the tradition of Chinese literati painting, which regards painting as a carrier of spiritual expression. In Western modernism, when the artistic impulse cannot be satisfied through simple realistic reproduction, it turns to increasingly deepened abstract expression; while East Asian painting has always been an intellectual tool that enables artists to transcend the shackles of realism and directly point to the expression of philosophical ideas.

Artist Kim Chang-yeol (1929-2021), widely known for his water drop work, founded the Korean Contemporary Artists Association in 1957 and began his artistic activities in earnest, leading Korean-style informal art. He turned his attention to the international art world after participating in the 2nd Paris Biennale in 1961 and the São Paulo Biennale in 1965, and conducted various experiments until he settled in France after staying in the United States (1965-1969). After the success of his solo exhibition on the theme of water droplets in 1973, he devoted his life to one theme, which was like a journey to overcome the scars of war. The exhibition compiles his creative journey that led his life to water droplets, from his early work to his New York period, early years in France, and his later years. Through this exhibition, we aim to shed new light on the artist’s creative world, which sublimates the tragedy of modern history into water droplets.

Mar 20–Jul 13, 2025 (UTC+9)ENDED

To commemorate the 165th anniversary of the birth of Alphonse Mucha, the master of Art Nouveau, my art gallery will hold "Flowers of Art Nouveau: Alphonse Mucha Exhibition" from March 20, 2025 to July 13, 2025, providing audiences with the opportunity to directly appreciate Mucha's unique and symbolic art world. Art Nouveau is a unique art movement that does not follow any specific system or principles. With the rapid political, social and technological changes in Europe at the end of the 19th century, people felt the need to break away from the old order and embrace the new reality. Art Nouveau was born under such a demand of the times, and it had a significant impact on all aspects of visual art, including painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, and decorative arts. Mucha's unique style, known as the "Muchaesque," combined with Slavic folk motifs, made him a representative figure of the Art Nouveau movement. This exhibition reveals how Mucha's art and philosophy expanded beyond his success and fame in France to include Czech national identity. Explore his artistic journey through more than 300 works, including his original posters, prints, drawings, book publications, and design decorations.

Impressionism, from Monet to America: Light, across the ocean | The Hyundai Seoul
Feb 15–May 26, 2025 (UTC+9)ENDED
Seoul
The exhibition "Impressionism, from Monet to America: Light, Across the Ocean" will be held at ALT.1 in Hyundai Seoul from February 15 to May 26. Water Lilies by Claude Monet, a painter loved by Koreans, is coming to Korea. Monet is an artist who captured the fleeting beauty created by light on canvas. He is known as the originator of Impressionist painters. That is why Monet's landscapes change in various ways depending on the light, which fascinates even those who are not familiar with art. Despite the global art market recession, Water Lilies was sold at Sotheby's in New York for $65.5 million two months ago. Last year, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Impressionism, major museums such as the Musée d'Orsay in France held Impressionist exhibitions and borrowed paintings, resulting in no chance for Impressionism to enter Korea. For this reason, the special exhibition that will open next month is expected by people inside and outside the art world as a heavyweight masterpiece exhibition of all ages to kick off the new year. The bridge of European and American Impressionism, Worcester masterpieces gather in one place The Korea Economic Daily, which has been making waves in the art world since the end of the year with the exhibition "Vienna 1900, Dream Artists", jointly held this exhibition with the Worcester Art Museum in the United States to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Vienna 1900. This is the place where Impressionism was born, and you can see 53 points. The organizer of the exhibition explained, "This is a special opportunity to show Korean visitors a new look at Impressionism." The exhibition includes works by Monet, Cézanne, Renoir and Camille Pissarro, which were exhibited at the "First Impressionist Exhibition" held in Paris in 1874, as well as works by John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent. Alfred These are works by American Impressionist painters such as Sisley. This is because Impressionism, which originated in Europe, crossed the Atlantic and blossomed after encountering American nature, becoming the starting point of modern painting. Art lovers have high hopes for the exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Impressionism.
