Join PPI & Bellwether for a Class Matters Book Event and Panel | 1919 M St NW
Apr 9, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling in
Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard
struck down racial preference policies. The ruling led universities to see new ways to promote diversity, such as providing an admissions boost based on economic disadvantage rather than race. Recently, however, the Trump administration has
claimed
that even such race-neutral efforts are illegal if they are partly motivated by a desire to promote racial diversity.
Please join PPI and Bellwether for a panel discussion of whether “class, not race,” in college admissions offers a viable path for promoting social mobility and racial diversity.
Featured speakers include:
Richard D. Kahlenberg,
Director of the American Identity Project, Progressive Policy Institute and author of the new book,
Class Matters: The Fight to Get Beyond Race Preferences, Reduce Inequality and Build Real Diversity at America’s Colleges
Ruy Teixeira,
Senior Fellow, the American Enterprise Institute and Co-Editor of The Liberal Patriot
Alison Somin
, Senior Legal Fellow, Pacific Legal Foundation
Stacy Hawkins
, Law Professor, Rutgers Law School
Moderated by
Sam Fulwood III
, former LA Times National Correspondent
Opening remarks from
Will Marshall
, Founder and President of PPI, and
Andy Rotherham
, Co-Founder & Senior Partner of Bellwether
Breakfast and coffee will be provided. Copies of
Class Matters
will be available for purchase and signing—please reserve a book copy when you RSVP!
The panel will also be available to watch via Livestream. To receive a link, please

National Press Club Headliners: "David Frost Vs" with Wilfred Frost | The National Press Club
Apr 10, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Join us at
6:00 p.m.
on
Thursday, April 10
for an American debut of an episode of the new documentary series
David Frost Vs
followed by a discussion with Frost’s son,
Wilfred Frost,
on his father’s career and interviews’ impact on journalism.
Drawing from an archive of over 10,000 era-defining interviews, many of which have been lost for a generation,
David Frost Vs
presents a fresh perspective on the battles of yesterday, which have striking parallels to today’s culture. Frost’s work shows the mid-to-late 20th century as a furnace of change and uncertainty that continues to permeate current affairs.
“I have learned an enormous amount, and I think our viewers will too. Dad’s archive allows us to go behind the scenes of key moments in our recent history and re-examine those moments in a deeply personal way from the mouths of the protagonists themselves at the moments in their lives when it really mattered,” said Wilfred Frost. The six-part documentary series was made in collaboration with Wilfred and will be aired by MSNBC Films starting April 27.
Doors to the National Press Club’s
Holeman Lounge open at 5:30 p.m.
to allow attendees time to order a drink from the bar and mingle. To submit a question in advance for the speaker, put
FROST
in the subject line and email it to
headliners@press.org
. The deadline for submitting questions in advance is 2 p.m. on the day of the screening.

Crosswinds from the Eastern Flank: U.S. Commitments to NATO in Trump 2.0 | Mortara Center for International Studies
Apr 10, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
This panel, hosted by the SSP Student Council and the Center for Security Studies at the Walsh School of Foreign Service, aims to shed light on the new administration’s policies towards the eastern flank of NATO. President Trump has already stated that NATO allies should increase their defense spending to up to 5% of their GDP and has introduced in the transatlantic conversation the idea of the U.S. withdrawing some of its troops from Eastern Europe.
These statements prompt uncertainty for the future of NATO: How do allies navigate this uncertainty of security arrangements, and what can we expect from the transatlantic alliance in the near future? What shall be the response from European allies, to assure that burden sharing objectives are met? We aim to find a response to these questions, and many others, by engaging in a discussion with distinguished experts from the think tank, political and academia environments.
The event will be opened by a keynote speech and Q&A from Romania’s Ambassador to the United States of America, His Excellency Andrei Muraru.
This discussion will be followed by an expert panel with the following speakers:
- Krista Viksnins, Program manager at CEPA - Center for European Policy Analysis;
- Inga Samoškaitė, Assistant Director with the Transatlantic Security Initiative within the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, Atlantic Council;
- James Siebens, Fellow at the Strategic Foresight Hub of Stimson Center;
- Daniel Kochis, Senior Fellow in the Center on Europe and Eurasia at Hudson Institute;
- Peter Doran, Senior Fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies;
- Professor Sara Moller from the Center for Security Studies, Georgetown University (moderator).
Refreshments and coffee will be provided.

An Evening with Nicole Rucker and Becky Krystal for FAT + FLOUR | Bold Fork Books
Apr 10, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Join Bold Fork Books and Nicole Rucker for an evening celebrating FAT + FLOUR: THE ART OF A SIMPLE BAKE while enjoying sweet & savory bakes from the book.
ABOUT THE COOKBOOK
A fuss-free, downright delicious collection of recipes for pies, cookies, brownies, cakes, and more—from “pastry queen” (
Bon Appétit
) Nicole Rucker, chef/owner of Los Angeles’s Fat + Flour
Fat + Flour
is a celebration of the delights that abound when these two simple ingredients come together. Famed for her rustic desserts, homespun pies, and unique flavor combinations, Nicole Rucker is revered as one of America’s best bakers, and in this baking bible she shares the accessible, unfussy recipes that made her name.
From Rucker’s legendary pies—White Chocolate Banana Cream Pie! Stone Fruit Party Pie!—to cookies (Boozy Banana Snickerdoodles!), bars (Abuelita Milk Chocolate Brownies!), loaf cakes (Zucchini and Date Loaf Cake!), and much more, the book is a treasure trove of treats (including not one, not two, but five different chocolate chip cookies, six kinds of brownies, six unique apple pies, and five distinctly different banana breads).
Rucker gives readers everything they need to make bakery-quality baked goods at home—but without the fuss, in part thanks to what she calls the Cold Butter Method, a low-effort technique for melding fat and flour that produces perfect cookies and the tenderest pie dough every time. A cookbook guaranteed to take your baking to the next level.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nicole Rucker
is a chef and author living and baking in Los Angeles. This is her second book. Her first,
Dappled: Baking Recipes for Fruit Lovers
, was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2020. Rucker owns Fat + Flour Bakery with her husband, Blaine.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Becky Krystal
is the recipes editor for Washington Post Food, following a six-year stint as a staff writer and recipe developer. After several years as a general assignment reporter in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, she came to The Washington Post in 2007 to work for TV Week and Sunday Source. How might they compensate for the loss of revenue from oil and gas exports? Beyond oil and gas, how will they manage responsible ownership of the vast mineral and uranium resources found in Central Asia?

Tour Of Tales- Washington, DC | George Washington University MSA
Apr 11, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
A Tour Of Tales
The story of Prophet Yusuf (AS) is presented in the Qur’an as an exemplary model of exhibiting endurance through difficulties, accepting Divine decree and continuing to persevere in the way of Allah (SWT). Surah Yusuf teaches us that the resolve of Dunya is pain and the essence of faith is the belief that our agony serves a purpose, that we will ultimately reap its benefits in the Akhira.
From the Dream to the Throne will present an emotional analysis on the life of Prophet Yusuf (AS) as he drifts through chapters in his life marked with greed, lies and betrayal and, through the eloquence of the Qur’an, will extract lessons that are potent to the life we live today.

Explore historic canals of Washington D.C. by bike/scooter | 1201 New Jersey Ave SE
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Few people know that historic canals were critical to the growth of Washington D.C. in the early 19th century. These canals include the Washington City Canal, the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal and the Alexandria Canal. This bike/scooter tour explores the historic canals, canal boats, locks, and lockkeeper houses - and the people who built and used this incredible transportation infrastructure.
Bring your own bike/scooter - safety helmets are required. If you choose to rent a bike, there is a Capital Bikeshare docking station at our meeting point (more info about Capital Bikeshare in the FAQ section below). The ride is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) on flat ground and takes about 2 hours.
Here are the highlights of our tour:
From our meeting point, it is a very short ride to the
Navy Yard Terminus
of the historic
Washington City Canal
. From there we proceed as closely as possible along the path of the historic canal. We stop at
Canal Park
, a three-block stretch of 2nd St. SE which has several interpretive signs and historic photographs. From Canal Park, we ride around a section of the original path of the historic canal which was overtaken by what is now the Southeast Freeway (Interstate 695) and CSX railway. Along this detour we make a
surprise stop
at a place that predates the historic canal. Back on our bikes/scooters, we return to the historic path of the Washington City Canal on what is now Canal St. SE and ride to the
Lockkeepers House.
Along the way, we see the Washington City Canal memorialized at
Freedom Plaza
. Then we make a brief stop to see artifacts of the historic Washington City Canal discovered when the National Museum of African American History was under construction. At the Lockkeeper's House you will learn the history of the house as well as the massive project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to create West Potomac Park and East Potomac Park. After departing the Lockkeeper's House, we ride along a route approximating the path of the
C&O Canal Extension
to
C&O Canal Mile 0
, a stone marker at the C&O Canal's southeastern terminus. Here we see the ruins of
Tide Lock A
that connected the C&O Canal to the Potomac River. From there the final leg of our ride takes us to
C&O Canal Lock 4
. There we will see a
working lift lock
, where a
canal packet boat
will be docked near the National Park Service's Visitor Center in Georgetown.

Hybrid Event: Book of Potions, Lauren K. Watel | East City Bookshop
Apr 14, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
East City Bookshop welcomes Lauren K Watel to discuss her work,
Book of Potions
, in conversation with E. Hughes and E. Ethelbert Miller.
Note on Format:
This hybrid event will have both an in-person component with limited seating as well as a virtual broadcast via Zoom Webinar. Both in-person and virtual attendees will be able to pose questions to the author during audience Q&A.
ABOUT
BOOK OF POTIONS
Winner of the 2023 Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry, selected by Ilya Kaminsky.
Written with tremendous urgency and ferocious candor, the prose poems of
Book of Potions
captures a woman caught in the middle of life: no longer young, not yet old, trapped between generations, locked in stereotyped roles and stultifying social norms, confined by other people’s expectations and their projections of what a woman should be.
By turns enraged, funny, frustrated, astute and joyful, these short hybrid pieces (potion = poem + fiction) combine the lyric compression of poetry with the narrative expansiveness of prose. Readers will meander, spellbound, through a wildly imaginative dream world of fairy-tale landscapes, allegorical insights, social satire, thought experiments and vivid surreal imagery, scenes of otherworldly strangeness and haunting beauty. These potions are elixirs in language, some healing, some poisonous, all magical.
Lauren K. Watel’s
debut book, a collection of prose poetry entitled BOOK of POTIONS (potion = poem + fiction), was awarded the Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry, selected by Ilya Kaminsky, and came out in February from Sarabande Books. Her poetry, fiction, essays and translations have appeared widely. A native of Dallas, TX, she lives in Decatur, GA.
