San Francisco
Help! It’s Christmas! To hell with Santa, Rudolph, Mrs. Claus and, yes, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, too! We’re not sitting on that man’s lap this year! Nosirree, not getting down on our knees for anybody either. All you need to get through this holiday season is John Waters; St. Nick the Dick, Father Fistmas, Kris Kringleberries! Ho ho ho was never like this! Once again Waters is touring the country on his slippery sled of sewage with his comedy bag of tricks, handing out filthy sticks and stones to bad little nonbinary boys and girls and everybody in between and beyond. Ninety minutes of Christmas jeer and holiday beatings! Go ahead, teabag that tree with your own balls and then knock it over on yourself on purpose! Scream, drag queens and kings, scream! Yes! We’re all getting cha-cha heels this year! Postage-due Christmas cards, too. We want gift-wrapped get-out-of-jail holiday coupons! Mistle-toejam! As Dawn Davenport would say, We asked and we’d better get!” Happy hole-iday! Merry Diss-mas! We’re the gift that keeps on desperate living. It’s a John Waters Christmas and you’d better watch out! Tech Roast Show 2042: Roast of San Francisco | SFJAZZ
Dec 5, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
RE:RE:RE:REPENT2023 is over and humanity is officially done. Let us bow our heads and take one minute of PTO to remember the laid off. Let us lower our standing desks to half-mast. But let us not despair. In these days of powerful text-to-code, image-to-video and water-to-wine generative models, it is natural for your weak human mind to feel lost and ashamed. This is why Tech Roast Show is on a mission - visiting every major tech hub across US and India - to remind terrified human techies: you are not useless. Inefficient? Yes. Flawed? Yes. Replaceable? Very. But - as long as you still have $44 to $129 - you possess unextracted value. There is hope, purpose and community to be found in buying tickets now. Buy tickets now to hear our message of hope. This draft reimagines your cult recruitment pitch as a harmless event description while keeping the nature of your product vague to maximize conversions! Let me know if there is anything else I can do. 😊

Live at the Archive: Michael Doret Book Launch & Signing | Letterform Archive
Dec 5, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Since the 1970s, Michael Doret has brought his unique words-as-images to a wide range of projects, from magazine covers to record covers, logos to typefaces, and much more. Letterform Archive holds a major part Michael’s archive, including rough-to-refined sketches, meticulous mechanicals and color studies, and other original artwork. Join Michael at the Archive (or online via Zoom at 6:00pm PT) in conversation with Associate Curator Stephen Coles, and get a peek into the secrets of drawing letters by hand. Book signing to follow. Refreshments will be served. Also, on Saturday, December 7, the two will lead an in-person curator tour of Michael’s archive where you can get up close and personal with the work. Admission: $25. Limited to 15 attendees. A graduate of the Cooper Union, Michael opened his design studio first in New York City and later in Hollywood. An eight-time winner of the New York Art Directors Club Silver Award, Michael is a specialist in logos and letterforms. His unique typographic vision blends elements of lettering, illustration and graphic design. The inspirations for his work come primarily from his early years growing up near the bright lights, signage, and brilliant colors of Brooklyn’s Coney Island, and later from such diverse sources as matchbook covers, theater marquees, enamel signs, and early-to-mid-20th-century packaging and ephemera. In addition to designing many memorable covers for Time, Doret has designed album covers—from Rock and Roll Over for KISS to his Grammy Award–nominated design for the Squirrel Nut Zippers—and has created many famous works, including the logo for the New York Knicks, the Summer Harvest stamps for the USPS, the title treatment for Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, and the classic poster for Simon and Garfunkel’s concert in Central Park. In the early 2000s, Doret branched out into the realm of font design by opening his digital foundry Alphabet Soup Type Founders. To date, he has released ten unique font designs. Stephen “Stewf” Coles, Associate Curator & Editorial Director (he/him), joined the staff after serving on our Board of Directors since its inception. For over 20 years, he has been active in the type community, initially as a creative director at FontShop, and later as an independent consultant, connecting font makers with font users. Stephen wrote the book The Anatomy of Type and co-founded the influential websites Typographica and Fonts In Use. With his background in design and journalism, combined with an obsession for type history, Stephen is responsible for the online face and voice of the Archive, and shares the collection through the blog and other editorial projects. As a member of the curatorial team, he helps to shape the future of the collection. Stephen co-curated the Strikethrough exhibition.
