David Zwirner is pleased to announce Sidewalk Chalk, an exhibition of new paintings by American artist Katherine Bernhardt at the gallery’s 616 N Western Avenue location in Los Angeles. Featuring Bernhardt’s signature lively brushwork and vibrant palette, the works in this presentation continue to expand the artist’s unique visual lexicon, which culls from an irreverent pop vernacular as well as her own life and the broader culture. Here she focuses on newer motifs such as Lucky Charms cereal marshmallows and sticks of butter, which are playfully combined with iconic imagery from her oeuvre, including the Sesame Street character Cookie Monster, the Pink Panther, and Garfield.

Tumble down the rabbit-hole of Key Hiraga’s work in the late-60s and early-70s and find yourself in a comical world of swollen extremities and orifices: boobs, dicks, noses, and tongues, licking, waggling, penetrating, and pimpled. This is a mute floating world where sex, lurid and illogical, is everywhere, and biology operates according to chaotic rules. Bodies might interpenetrate, split apart, or open a window into their innards, exposing gurgling intestines or a fetus waving happily from inside a womb. A central character of this universe is Mr. K, whose goggling, bloodshot eyes and bowler hat make him an avatar of the artist himself, and whose “elegant life” these pictures describe.

Laura Karetzky's artistic approach involves challenging traditional narrative structures. She achieves this by merging multiple moments into a unified, believable instance, which alters the viewer's understanding of time and perspective. Her works evoke the feeling of simultaneously experiencing multiple narratives, rather than being confined to a single, linear story.

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles presents Robert Kushner: Dahlias—Fields of Steadfastness, the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery. I have known Robert Kushner for three decades, a serendipitous blessing that I chalk up to our mutual commitment to art and meditation. I’m equally pleased to share this personal note from him, below. This small window into his life and work captures the essence of who he is as a person and an artist: generous and kind, with a sharp, inquisitive mind and exquisite vision—but perhaps even more, a sagacious spirit and sense of self. This new series of paintings pays tribute to one of his favorite flowers, the dahlia—symbol of beauty, eternal love, resilience and inner strength—and marks a unique moment in his long and distinguished career. Luis De Jesus Los Angeles presents Jim Adams: Flight of Mirrors, the artist's second solo exhibition with the gallery. The paintings in Flight of Mirrors continue Jim Adams’ long-standing exploration of portraiture and mythology, as he reimagines himself within landscapes and interiors that merge past and present. Created over the past six years during the pre- and post-Covid period, but also including self-portraits from the mid-1990s and 2000s, Adams sparks a dialogue across history, identity, and social change, drawing from his deep engagement with history and current events to reinterpret timeless narratives for our contemporary world.

H Art Foundation and AT Gallery present Aurora Rainbow, an exhibition of new abstract works by renowned Chinese artist Pan Jian (b. 1975). Co-curated by AT Gallery's Allison Thompson and H Art Foundation's Rong Peng, the exhibition continues in the vein of Pan Jian's previous Fire Rainbow series, inspired by the celestial beauty of the aurora borealis and rainbow. A total of 15 works are on display, 10 of which are being shown for the first time in Los Angeles, providing a rare opportunity for viewers to experience the latest transformation of Pan Jian's artistic career up close. Through his strong abstract language, the artist invites viewers to experience the collision of color, light and emotion, and to rediscover the magnificence and magic of the natural world.

Carpenters Workshop Gallery Los Angeles presents an exhibition celebrating the prolific career of the late architect, sculptor and designer José Zanine Caldas, whose sculptural style and commitment to ecological awareness made him a leading figure in Brazilian modernism. Raw and sensual in character, the works combine modern elegance with an environmental consciousness that was avant-garde for this radical creator’s time.

French painter Gustave Caillebotte’s interest in male subjects sharply distinguishes him from his Impressionist peers. Overwhelmingly, he observed and depicted the men in his life—including his brothers, bachelor friends, fellow sportsmen, and the workers and bourgeois of his neighborhood—and did so in bracingly original paintings that often subverted artistic and gender norms. His distinctive vision of modern masculinity is considered here for the first time in a major international loan exhibition.

This pop-up reading room surveys a global history of photobooks by women photographers from the Getty Library. Chöd “to sever, to cut” is a Tibetan meditation practice, first developed by the eleventh-century yoginī Machig Labdrön, that aims to cut through the demons of hindrance and obscuration that block our realization of our true nature. The practitioner of Chöd seeks to utilize the power of fear to cut through ego-clinging. Machig Labdrön writes, “… [T]here is no greater devil than this present ego-clinging, and because of this all the devils will rear their ugly heads as long as one has not severed this clinging to ego.” Join us for this immersive Dharma Art experience in the auditorium at PRS! BIOS Arik Moonhawk Roper attended the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1991-1995 specializing in cartooning, illustration, and screen printing. He has since developed a devoted following creating seminal record covers and screenprint posters for a wide variety of bands including rock and metal legends such as Earth, Sunn O))), Sleep, Howlin' Rain, High on Fire, The Black Crowes, Kvelertak, Cathedral, Astra, Earthless, and Windhand among many others. His influences include diverse artists and styles ranging from comic and fantasy art to graphic design and classic illustration. Roper’s work encompasses a diverse field of design and distinct style, ranging from black and white illustration, to meticulous lettering and logo design, to rich abstract psychedelic color and landscapes that often seem to exist in their own universe. The imagery springs from the depths of a fertile imagination, invoking psychedelic visions, ancient dreams, and idyllic natural environments. With an interest in mythology, consciousness, psychology, religion and other timeless subjects, Roper mixes the light and the dark within his art to reveal imagery which is at once strangely unique, distantly familiar and always soaked with an earnestly fantastic aesthetic. His book, Mushroom Magick (Abrams, 2009), is a vividly surreal collection of exotic fungal species from around the world. His art has also appeared in books such as De Gotham City a Metropolis by French Paper Art Club, Juxtapoz New Contemporaries, Revisionaries: A Decade of Art in Tokion, Appendix N: The Eldritch Root son Dungeons & Dragons, and Taschen's Plant Magick. His band Earthless has toured the world many times over during this time. Isaiah has been involved in Buddhist and Hindu teachings since he was a teenager and has found that bringing the insights from these books into his guitar playing brings a state of awareness much like the meditative states one experiences in silent meditation. This is the focus point of what he does while playing. How close can we get into the present moment and touch the divine and express the feelings within outwardly with sonic sounds? Music is painting in the air, a journey to show us who we are and what we are capable of. And to help others on their journey. All is One and feeling this it it’s completeness is the goal. Doc Kelley teaches Buddhism and Asian religion at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School University in New York City.
