Dr. De Kai on Raising AI: An Essential Guide to Its Use | The Commonwealth Club

Jul 17, 2025 (UTC-7)
San Francisco
Cultural Experiences
In a world in which artificial intelligence will change everything, we need a leader to illuminate the impact of “the automation of thought” on our way of life. How is the widespread use of AI impacting our world, our minds, and our future—not just as a technical innovation but as a mode of culture? Should we be afraid? De Kai has been a trailblazer in the world of AI. He invented and built the world’s first global-scale online language translator that spawned Google Translate, Yahoo Translate, and Microsoft Bing Translator. He brings decades of his paradigm-shifting work at the nexus of artificial intelligence and society to help people make sense of their interactions with AI at both personal and collective levels—ethically and responsibly. While Hollywood narratives of AI destroying humanity might be overblown, the age of AI is reshaping the future of civilization. What should each of us do as the responsible adults in the room? De Kai asks critical, overlooked questions requiring urgent attention. Dr. De Kai is professor of computer science and engineering at HKUST and distinguished research scholar at Berkeley’s International Computer Science Institute. He was honored by the Association for Computational Linguistics as one of only 17 Founding Fellows. De Kai is an independent director of the AI ethics think tank The Future Society and was one of eight inaugural members of Google’s AI ethics council. His book Raising AI provides an accessible framework to navigate the enormous impact of AI upon human culture, our values, and the flow of information. De Kai demonstrates that society can not only survive the AI revolution but also flourish in a new world where we all play our part in a more humane, compassionate, and understanding society—alongside our artificial children. Our moderator, Camille Crittenden, Ph.D., is the executive director of CITRIS and the Banatao Institute and co-founder of the CITRIS Policy Lab and EDGE (Expanding Diversity and Gender Equity) in Tech at UC. She served as chair of the California Blockchain Working Group in 2019–20 and co-chaired the Student Experience subcommittee of the University of California’s Presidential Working Group on Artificial Intelligence. She continues to serve on the UC AI Council. 5 p.m. doors open & check-in 530–6:30 p.m program 6:30 p.m. book signing (all times Pacific Time) Information Source: Commonwealth Club World Affairs | eventbrite

Friday July 18th, 2025 DJ Dials & 1015 Folsom Present: SHADES Alix Perez (Belgium/UK) and Eprom (USA) are SHADES Perez found his rise to fame in drum n bass, releasing on Shogun Audio, Exit Recordings amongst many other labels and collaborating with the foremost names in dance and electronic music such as Noisia, Foreign Beggars, dBridge, and many more. Eprom gained his well-deserved success through his innovative take on bass music, a unique sound that has the likes of Gaslamp Killer, Kutmah, D-Styles singing his praises and supporting his music. SHADES exemplifies slanted grooves, a deep pocket and hard yet graceful composition. The debut self-titled EP (released on Alpha Pup) is a truly unique body of work. Aware of each other’s music for some time before meeting, Perez and Eprom first crossed paths at the 2013/2014 Northern Bass festival in New Zealand. The following summer they met again at the Red Bull Studios LA producing the Foreign Beggars’ Modus EP. This initial studio session led to further collaborations and SHADES was born. XLR8R have rightly said “music that’s not only a legitimate full-frontal assault in the same vein as tunes from that golden era of gluttonous bass and synths, but that embraces that ethos while giving it a more polished feel”. 21+ Information Source: 1015 Folsom | eventbrite

There are quite a few guidelines that must be followed in order for our Guinness World Record attempts to be validated. Please read all the info below and be prepared when the time comes to skate. Every participant must be registered for the world record event. Each participant will receive a bib number that must be placed in plain sight on their chest area. The event will be videotaped from many angles and by many media people. The registrations, bib numbers, videotapes and media coverage are all crucial elements in the verification process. The World’s Longest Skating Serpentine is both inline and regular roller skates. A skating serpentine is a long line of skaters that are linked hand to hand. The leader or “head“ of the serpentine moves forward and the chain of skaters follow. The head makes turns to the left and to the right as it moves forward forming a snake-like motion with the chain of skaters. This is the serpentine. The chain must travel at least 400 meters in an unbroken chain.HOLDING ONTO CLOTHING, BACKPACKS OR ANYTHING OTHER THAT THE PERSON'S HAND IN THE CHAIN VOIDS THE RECORD ATTEMPT.IF THE CHAIN BREAKS AT ANY POINT THE ATTEMPT IS VOID. Be aware of the kind of clothing that you wear. We want everyone to be bright and colorful, but we don't want you or others tripping or being interfered with by hats, long coats, scarfs, feather boas or other articles that would cause the record to be voided. You must be a competent skater to participate. No pets are allowed. No dogs on leashes. A competent child skate will be allowed, but if you present a child that is deemed not competent enough to participate, you will be responsibility for the trama that child will suffer from the experience, so don't make us say no to your child because we will if we have to. San Francisco
Cultural Experiences
** FOR SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA SINGLES ** Get ready for a fun night of trivia on Zoom with other singles in your area! Grab some snacks or even a cocktail and come try out the singles event that's the perfect way to make new social connections. Let's face it, we're all tired of the endless swiping on dating apps and interacting with people who may or may not look like or be like the person they're portraying on the apps. A Singles Trivia Night is a much better way to meet someone because you actually get to interact with people on video (Zoom) before committing to a real life date. This is the safest and best way to meet someone! WE DO THESE EVENTS EVERY 2 MONTHS OR SO AND WE SLIGHTLY CHANGE UP THE AGE RANGE FOR EACH EVENT. CHECK OUR UPCOMING SCHEDULE BELOW TO SEE THE AGE RANGES FOR EACH EVENT DATE. THE AGE RANGES ARE ONLY SUGGESTED MEANING THAT IF YOU'RE WITHIN A FEW YEARS OF THE AGE RANGE YOU'RE WELCOME TO ATTEND: *************************************************************** *************************************************************** SCHEDULE: TUESDAY MAY 27 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 30s, 40s & 50s TUESDAY JULY 22 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 20s & 30s TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 16 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 30s & 40s *************************************************************** *************************************************************** HOW THE EVENT WORKS: Our friendly host will welcome everyone and then you'll be put on a team with other singles from your area. We will have about 3 different cities on at the same time but we make sure to put you on a team with people from your city. You will work with your team to answer fun trivia questions and compete with singles from the other 2 cities in attendance. In each round you'll go into breakout rooms where you'll get to meet, chat with and come up with your trivia question answers with the other singles in attendance (you're never put on the spot having to come up with an answer on your own... you'll always be able to consult with the group before answering so it's very low pressure, laid back and fun). At the end of the event you'll be given contact info of the people you'd like to stay in touch with (as platonic friends to hang out with or as potential dating partners). THIS IS THE PERFECT EVENT TO.... Find that special someone! Make new friends in your area! Meet other like minded singles! Meet some fun wingmen and/or wingwomen! Meet new activity partners in your area! Expand your social circle! Once you sign up, you'll be given a link to join a group of other singles via video on Zoom. All you need is a laptop, phone or tablet to take part in the event. You'll enjoy an evening of fun trivia. We balance the questions making sure there are plenty of different topics and difficulty levels so everyone will have a good time. Our friendly host will be with you live on Zoom orchestrating the most fun trivia event you've ever been to! STAY IN TOUCH WITH ANYONE YOU MEET! At the end of the event all of the attendees are invited to put their email address in the chat box to the event host. The event host will then send an email to all attendees containing everyone's email address so you can contact whomever you'd like. If you're not comfortable putting your "every day" email address you can use an alternative email address or you can make another email address to use for the event. Yahoo, Outlook and Gmail allow you create several free email addresses and setting one up takes about 3 minutes. Then after the event you can feel free to email any people you'd like to see again. If people email you it's up to you if you'd like to reply to them. EVENT DETAILS: About 85% of people sign up by themself so don't worry if you're coming on alone! Our host will make introductions and put you on a team with other singles from your city! It's a fantastic way to meet new people and we've witnessed countless friendships formed and love connections sparked at this event. You're never put on the spot to come up with answers... you'll be working with your team to answer the questions. You'll answer great trivia questions in all of your favorite categories like pop culture, history, entertainment (music, movies & TV), arts & literature, science and more. The winning team gets a prize! * We have several unique rounds of trivia which keeps it really fun and exciting. Some rounds are like traditional trivia nights (simply answering trivia questions), other rounds are totally unique and change at each event. Sometimes we may show you a series of photos and ask you trivia questions about the photos, other times we play games like "Reverse Family Feud" where you'd have to guess the least popular answers to our question (it's soooo much fun!), or sometimes we'll play a "Find The Common Link" game where you'll have to answer some questions and figure out the common link between all the answers like this: Question #1: A Tomato Based Dip Question #2: A High Stakes Scenario Might Be Described As Make-Or-What? Questions #3: The 2005 Film About Johnny Cash Is "Walk The _________"? Question #4: What German-Austrian Actor's Breakout Role Came In Quentin Tarantino's Film Inglourious Basterds? Answers: #1: Salsa #2: Break #3: Line #4: Cristoph Waltz You and your team would have to first answer the questions and then figure out that the common link between the answers is "Dance". * QUICK NOTE: THERE ARE LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE FOR THIS EVENT SO SIGN UP ASAP TO MAKE SURE YOU GET A SPOT * WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE EVENT: "I love trivia and this was one of the most exciting trivia nights I've ever been to. It's a better way to meet someone than the dating apps." - Robert N. "As a busy professional, I just don't have time to get out and meet people as much as I'd like so this event was like a Godsend for me. It was a refreshingly fantastic experience." - Jennifer S. "What a fabulous concept. I met some great people and I started dating someone I met at the event." - Hannah M. "I met some really cool people. Such a fun way to spend an evening and home." - Lauren C.. "The questions were unique and interesting. While most people come on by themself, just message the host when you hop on Zoom and let her know that you'd like to be on the same team as your friend If I attended a past event with you, can I sign up for this one? Yes, In fact we never use repeat questions feel free to sign up with as many of our upcoming events as you'd like! How do I join the event? After you sign up on to Eventbrite we will send you a link with an invitation to join the event on Zoom. We'll send you that link by the day of the event. If for some reason you don't see an email from us by the event date, make sure to check your spam folder in case it ended up there by accident. How long does the event last? One hour and 45 miutes How many will be participating? We expect between 15 and 30 people (it varies from event to event). Is there a refund policy? If you need to cancel, please email us and we can transfer you to a future event. However we do not offer transfers if you cancel on the day of the event or don't show up. WHY THIS EVENT WORKS! For many years we organized in person traditional speed dating events. While waiting for everyone to show up, the host would do some trivia questions as icebreakers to "kill time" until everyone arrived. We noticed something fascinating begin to happen. People got to know each other better and made more connections during the trivia than they did during the actual speed dating rounds! The trivia questions sparked so much conversation that we thought, "Wow, we should make an entire event like this!". And that is how our Singles Trivia Night was started! THESE EVENTS WILL LIKELY SELL OUT BY EVENT TIME AND WE HAVE LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE AT EACH EVENT SO GRAB YOUR TICKET ASAP! Information Source: Fun Events | eventbrite
