Exhibitions
With work that exudes cool elegance and unconventional sensuality, Tamara de Lempicka (1894-1980) helped define Art Deco. Her paintings captured the glamour and energy of postwar Paris and the cosmopolitan glamour of Hollywood celebrity. This exhibition, the first major museum retrospective of Lempicka in the United States, explores the artist's unique style and eclectic life through four main chapters. The more than 100 works on display include her post-Cubist works from 1920s Paris, her most famous nudes and portraits, and melancholic still lifes and interiors from her last days in the United States and Mexico. The exhibition offers an in-depth look at the artist's drawings and research, revealing the creative process behind her iconic paintings.

Layla Martinez on WOODWORM with Daniela Blei | Medicine for Nightmares

Nov 4, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED

Literary Arts
Medicine for Nightmares in San Francisco welcomes Spanish writer Layla Martínez to discuss the English release of her debut novel, Woodworm, translated by Sophie Hughes and Annie McDermott. She will be in conversation with Daniela Blei. This event is co-presented by the Center for the Art of Translation and The Ruby. The house breathes. The house contains bodies and secrets. The house is visited by ghosts, by angels that line the roof like insects, and by saints that burn the bedsheets with their haloes. It was built by a smalltime hustler as a means of controlling his wife, and even after so many years, their daughter and her granddaughter can't leave. They may be witches or they may just be angry, but when the mysterious disappearance of a young boy draws unwanted attention, the two isolated women, already subjects of public scorn, combine forces with the spirits that haunt them in pursuit of something that resembles justice. In this lush translation by Sophie Hughes and Annie McDermott, Layla Martinez's eerie debut novel is class-conscious horror that drags generations of monsters into the sun. Described by Mariana Enriquez as a house of women and shadows, built from poetry and revenge, this vision of a broken family in our unjust world places power in the hands of the eccentric, the radical, and the desperate. Gilded Glass Ornament Workshop with Master Gilder Lynne Rutter | Lynne Rutter Studio

Nov 9, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Arts
Fine Art
Join us for a small group, hands-on workshop to learn the ancient art of verre églomisé with Odd Salon Fellow Lynne Rutter In this class we’ll delve into some gilding history, while learning how to mirror glass the historic way, with finely beaten sheets of gold. The practice of gilding dates back to at least 3000 BC, and can be found in tomb decorations, ornamentation, furniture and frames, and in works of religious and fine art. Gilded glass goes back to 1st century BC and maybe even further. Not much survives, as these pieces were delicate. What we now call “verre églomisé is a set of techniques that were only rarely used until the 18th century when a decorator and framer named Jean Baptiste Glomy became famous for gilded glass frames and mirrors. People began to say the glass has been “Glomy-fied” or églomisé. Glass gilding and back-painting glass was generally limited to clock cases and small items, until the mid-19th century when signwriters started making elaborate gilded glass signs to catch the light and attention for shops. Today, the practice of gilding still follows historical practices, handed down through generations of artisans. Ticket price includes supplies for the workshop, and everyone will go home with a fine art ornament of their own making. Create gilded Harvey ornament, or select an idea from designs we will have on hand. Lynne Rutteris a Fellow of Odd Salon, and is a fine art muralist and decorative painter based in San Francisco, whose work emphasizes site-specific design and authentic materials and techniques. She has been an active part of the design community for over 35 years and has completed hundreds of installations nationally and internationally. Gilding has played an important role in Lynne’s work whether in restoration, ornamentation, or her large-scale paintings. You can see more of Lynne’s work on her blog The Ornamentalist where she writes about the finer points of color and décor, and her adventures while traveling with her camera. Join IAMA in welcoming the Romanian Art Collective's exhibition In Between. In Between will open to the public on November 9th, 2024 with an opening reception from 2-5 PM. Expect to see great art, meet the artists, and enjoy complimentary bites and refreshments! About: In Between The experience of being here and there — caught in the space between — defines those who have uprooted, relocated, and engaged in a dynamic process of renewal and reinvention, embracing new cultures, while holding onto the memories of their past. This multimedia exhibit invites reflection on the complex challenges faced by individuals who cross physical, social, and emotional borders. It explores the deep feelings of foreignness that those who cross experience both at home and in their new environments through frames like nostalgia, memory, and a sense of living between worlds. About the collective: Romanian Art Collective SF (RAC-SF), brings together a dynamic group of visual, performance, and applied artists, each of whom contribute their distinct personal viewpoints to the collective. RAC-SF’s mission is to engage and enrich the larger Bay Area artistic practice and discourse through exhibitions, public events, and collaborations. Our programs bridge the local Romanian community culturally and personally. On a broader level, we seek to foster dialogue and build connections with artistic communities through exhibitions and collaborative projects. SF Bicycle Coalition Adult Learn to Ride Class | Arguello Boulevard & Lincoln Way

Nov 10, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
Cycling
Sports & Fitness
It's never too late to learn to bicycle! Instructors will work one-on-one to assist participants in learning the basics of balancing, starting, stopping and steering a bike, as well as proper helmet fit and adjustment. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don't, they will leave with tips to continue teaching themselves to ride. The first step will be balancing on your bicycle; instructors will first remove the pedals and lower the seat enough so that you can put both feet on the ground. You'll learn balance by taking longer and longer steps until you're gliding. Then, once you've got that down, we'll show you how to turn confidently and stop smoothly.Once you feel comfortable, we'll reinstall the pedals, so you can incorporate pedaling and learning to steer, and how to steer precisely in circles and figure-eights.You'll finish your lesson by learning how to shift gears so you can handle hills and prepare for more city riding. Please be sure you can sit on your bike seat with both feet flat on the ground. All participants MUST either bring a bike or rent a bike in advance. Bikes will not be available for rental at the class. If you don't have a bicycle, you will be contacted before the class with information on how to rent one. If you are unable to afford a bike rental (about $25), we have a limited budget to cover bike rentals for students. Please contact Qamuuqin (info below) about covering the cost. Please contact Qamuuqin Maxwell (qmaxwell@sfbike.org/‪415-323-0597) with any questions about this program. This class is part of the SFMTA’s Bicycle Safety Education program, presented in partnership with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. This project is made possible by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority through a grant of Proposition K Local Transportation Sales Tax Funds. The resulting monograph, Citizen Printer, features more than 800 reproductions representing the full breadth of Kennedy’s 35-year career in letterpress printing (including rarely seen artist’s books), plus essays that explore Kennedy’s influences and personal mission of printing words of social justice for the masses. Citizen Printer is also Kennedy's major solo exhibition, curated by design educator and practitioner Kelly Walters and on view now through January at Letterform Archive. With over 150 type-driven artifacts from the self-described “humble negro printer, this exhibition, together with the book, embraces the rich cultural traditions of Black printing and the importance of free expression. In-person at the San Francisco Public Library (recorded for online viewing later), Kennedy and Parker will riff on their adventures in bringing the book to life, while exploring the experiences that have shaped Kennedy as a printing revolutionary. You'll have an opportunity to purchase Amos' books—and get them signed—after the program's Q&A. Letterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library, where events are free and open to all. Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr., was working a corporate job when, at nearly forty, he discovered the art of letterpress printing on a tour of Colonial Williamsburg. Kennedy then devoted himself to the craft, earning an MFA in graphic design at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He now operates Kennedy Prints!, a letterpress printshop in Detroit. He has been featured in outlets like Hyperallergic, the New York Times, and the Economist, and he has exhibited in dozens of museums and galleries across the United States, including Poster House, the Brooklyn Public Library, the Library of Congress, and the libraries of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lucie Parker, made her first book when she was three years old, and — 200-plus titles later — she shows no sign of letting up. With nearly 15 years’ experience crafting best-selling books for the trade and gift markets, Lucie specializes in producing high-end, design-driven books, often in collaboration with museums — such as the Exploratorium and the Walt Disney Family Museum — and magazines, such as Popular Science. Lucie was formerly a senior editor at Weldon Owen Publishing, where she developed more than 20 art, lifestyle, and technology titles a year. We are thrilled to have her expertise and enthusiasm as we ramp up the Archive’s publishing program. Information Source: Letterform Archive | eventbrite

Join Rebekah Faubion at Books Inc. Laurel Village for a celebration of her charming debut romance The Lovers! Rebekah will be joined in conversation with fellow romance author Taleen Voskuni! About the book: If Kit Larson believes one thing, it’s that the cards never lie. She’s seen it proven time and time again as a tarot reader and mystic influencer. But unfortunately the cards didn’t warn her about her most recent breakup or her parents’ divorce, so when Kit is offered a gig at another influencer’s boho-chic Joshua Tree wedding she accepts for the distraction. And distract it does when she finds out her high school crush, Julia, is the wedding planner. Julia Kelley is her agency’s most sought-after wedding planner, and for a good reason—she's a perfectionist. Control means never showing others the vulnerable, blobby mess she really is deep down inside. Having an ex-girlfriend in the bridal party is a problem, sure, but reconnecting with the beautiful tarot reader who broke her heart as a teenager is so much worse. Kit’s cards once told her that she and Julia were Twin Flames, two halves of the same soul. With wedding events pushing them together, their spark reignites . . . and so does a chance at being lovers. “Brimming with magic, The Lovers is a beautiful and sexy story that reminds readers of the wonder of the stars—and the power we ourselves wield to carve out our own destiny. An ethereal, delightful read! —Ashley Herring Blake, USA Today bestselling author of Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date The Lovers totally delivers on its dreamy sapphic premise. This book wrapped me up in its lush setting, with characters that are as romantic as they are hilarious, and a plot full of tarot magic, deep sensitivity, and swoony, sparkly romance. —Bridget Morrissey, author of That Summer Feeling Rebekah Faubion delivers a spellbinding story about love, authenticity, and the magic of the universe. Kit and Julia's chemistry was off the charts and had me rooting so hard for these two lovely humans finding their way in the world and back toward each other. Witty, satisfying, and enchanting, The Lovers absolutely dazzles. —Taleen Voskuni, author of Sorry, Bro and Lavash at First Sight With a sizzling second chance romance, atmospheric setting, and true insight into Zillennial influencer culture, Faubion crafts an engrossing love story that tackles the complexity of coming out in adulthood with deft compassion, and proves that vulnerability and authenticity can open the doors to fate, love, and happy endings. —Emma R. Alban, author of Don't Want You Like a Best Friend “Witty banter and swoonworthy second chances create a queer romance that is as fun as it is magical. Faubion’s rich storytelling could make even the skeptic believe in soulmates.”—Liz Parker, author of In the Shadow Garden “Deftly led by two of the most vivid, flawed, lovable and compelling sapphics I’ve read in a while, this delicious second chance romance will have you laughing, holding back tears, and believing in the magic of fate and the cards. The Lovers absolutely sparkles, and readers will be eagerly awaiting Faubion’s next love story.”—Carlyn Greenwald, author of Sizzle Reel and Director’s Cut “A flawless second chance romance that’s sure to leave you grinning and kicking your feet, The Lovers explores themes of fate, agency, and living your authentic life, all while transporting you to a whimsical setting you’ll never want to leave. This book should rocket to the top of your TBR. An instant fave.”—Jennifer Dugan, author of Playing for Keeps “Faubion does a great job of creating the most delicious balance of caution and burn it to the ground chemistry between the two characters…Faubion has a very cinematic eye, which is clear from the beginning of the story. … It’s easy to get sucked into this world and these characters…If you’re looking for a good book to curl up with by the campfire and toast some s’mores, or to read while you sip your favorite seasonal beverage, The Lovers is absolutely the best choice. The cards say so.”—Autostraddle “Looking for an atmospheric second chance sapphic romance? With a touch of fate and undeniable chemistry, The Lovers will make for a magical read and awaken the itch to purchase a new set of tarot cards to convince you that your fate is written in the cards.”—The Nerd Daily No matter if you’re on the hunt for sapphic romance or just love a good soapy story, then The Lovers has your name all over it…The Lovers absolutely delivers on giving us some steam, some angst, and everything you’re looking for in a fall sapphic story.”—Cultress “If you like chemistry and angst in your sapphic romances, pick this one up.”—Bookriot Readers will enjoy Faubion’s novel about living and loving authentically. —Library Journal Rebekah Faubion is the author of The Lovers, a Nora Ephron-style, queer rom-com about a tarot card mystic who seems fated to fall for a wedding planner she has a past with, coming Summer 2024 from Berkley. When she isn’t writing books that make her bi soul sing, she enjoys painting on her deck, listening to BTS, and reading tarot by candlelight. Under her pen name, she is also the co-author of YA horror and adult romance novels. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and son. Taleen Voskuni is an Armenian-American writer who grew up in the Bay Area diaspora surrounded by a rich Armenian community and her ebullient family. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a BA in English and currently lives in San Francisco, working in tech. Other than a newfound obsession with writing romcoms, she spends her free time cultivating her kids, her garden, and her dark chocolate addiction. Sorry, Bro is her first published novel. SOME OF OUR FEATURED PERFORMERS: Tracy Lynn is a movement artist and teacher who melds modern fusion dance, yoga asana, and arm-balancing. For more than a decade, she has helped students utilize movement to transmute heaviness, trauma, and rewrite their body stories. She uses performance to reclaim the self, embody strength, and recognize both light and dark that coexist within us. Sha Sha Higby is known internationally for her mythical evocative and haunting performances using puppetry and masks, in the exquisite and ephemeral body sculpture she creates and moves within. It is a metaphorically rich and intimate journey in elaborate multi-layered costume, micropuppetry, and projection. Paul Mercer is a pioneer in neoclassical music, a violinist and composer whose sounds and timbres reveal the secret melodies and unlock the hidden stories of ancient violins and violas. His extensive Classical and Hindustani music training combines with decades of busking, playing in bands, managing a violin shop, and traveling to the four corners of the earth to create a distinctive style of layering centuries-old instruments with modern electronic effects. Paul has recorded and toured with artists including The Changelings, DP3, Jill Tracy, Zoe Keating, Brass Knuckle Surfer, and Faith And The Muse, and has composed more than 30 soundtracks for stage and film. His upcoming release The Whispering in the Wood , the long-anticipated follow-up to his 2013 album Ghosts , is a collection of improvisations and sonic explorations that unveils the voices of these precious instruments, speaking to us from beyond time. Anandha Ray, MA, MA, DTR, is an innovative creator in dance, inventing new methodologies in the teaching and performance of dance over a career that has spanned over 3 decades. An award-winning choreographer, her work shines light on the invisible and gives voice to the unspeakable, bridging the gap of understanding our humanness. And many more! VENDING FROM: Odd One Emporium is a self taught oddities artist based in Northern California and I create my art using many different techniques and ethically sourced specimens. I love to create beautiful dark macabre pieces and occasionally cross over to the lighter side. You will find specially mummified specimens, medical wet specimens, bugs, bones, and Taxidermy. I love creating something beautiful from death and giving a second life to the lost. Jeremy Rathbone is a Sacramento artist, best known on the comic convention circuit for his science fiction pieces, many of which were painted live on the show floor. His Zombots, Robovikings, and scifi paintings and illustrations have been shown at many public events, publications, and gallery exhibitions. After the passing of his wife in 2017, he put his brush down for what he had thought and intended to be for good. Today, Jeremy's trauma-informed pieces combine the arcane symbols of life and death with the mysteries of infinite space to both express and confront his feelings of grief and his need to connect with life. And much much more! Information Source: Darker Still Productions | eventbrite
