HKPAX: Maher Dance Company’s To Break Free is To Be | Hong Kong

Oct 15–Oct 16, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Arts
To Break Free is To Be by Maher Abdul Moaty is a compelling dance performance seamlessly blending the power of language with the dynamic artistry of movement, exploring the intricate relationship between dance and politics. This 50-minute showcase unfolds as a live, improvised composition, bringing authenticity and dynamism to every moment. Let the words remain silent to let the body speak. In the frame of dance and politics, the power of the words side by side with the power of movement is handled to demonstrate the invisible borders that chain the dream and hope of our times. One body movement can represent hundreds of words, and one word can move hundreds of bodies. Movement is the language of the body, through which silence can speak even when one is speechless. The choreography beautifully reflects a fusion of cultural backgrounds, providing a captivating experience celebrating the beauty and quality of diversity. More than just a dance performance, To Break Free is To Be is a jubilant celebration of collaboration, intercultural dialogue and artistic expression. Programme Remarks Approximately 50 minutes in duration.Free seating. You are recommended to arrive 15 minutes before the event starts. HKPAX: Anna Lo and Rick Lau's LauZone | Hong Kong

Oct 15–Oct 16, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Arts
“Where are you from? Where are you REALLY from?” This trivial bit of information seems useful only while filling in application forms. However, what else does our place of ancestry represent? Other than a few slang words, Hong Kong people are all but detached from the dialects spoken fluently among older generations. To tackle this bittersweet relationship, the multi-talented trio of Yuri Ng, Anna Lo and Rick Lau present LauZone—a poignant yet playful cabaret examining the rich variety of Chinese dialects, our ancestral roots, and the process of finding home. As the second instalment of a Tai Kwun-commissioned three-part cabaret series exploring unique Hong Kong stories (Part 1: Tri Ka Tsai, Part 3: The Farewell Comeback Tour), the premiere of LauZone in the 2021 Tai Kwun SPOTLIGHT: A Season of Performing Arts was a sold-out and much-praised success, with Rick Lau nominated for Best Actor at the 13th Hong Kong Theatre Libre Awards in 2022. Lau Zone is a Cantonese colloquial term describing non-Cantonese natives, which essentially includes most Hongkongers of previous generations, most having been immigrants to the city. Get ready for a euphony of dialects (e.g., Chiuchow, Shanghainese, Taishan), original music, and laughter as Rick Lau and Anna Lo shine in a cabaret show paying tribute to the lives and memories of the melting pot known as Hong Kong and the city’s collective roots and inherited legacy. Programme Remarks Approximately 60 minutes in duration.Free seating. You are recommended to arrive 15 minutes before the event starts. No admission for latecomers.Programmes are subject to change without prior notice. HKPAX reserves the right to make the final decision regarding the arrangements. HKPAX: The Rebel Alliance's Back To Square One? | Hong Kong

Oct 15–Oct 16, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Arts
The Rebel Alliance invites you into 95-year-old Inga’s living room in Denmark as she reaches out through space and time to her grandson in New Zealand. Inga has seen world wars, cold wars, civil wars, both in real life and on TV. And when you’re close to 100 you know a thing or two about a thing or two. Back to Square One? was originally designed to be performed in driveways, parks and cul-de-sacs in the aftermath of the 2020 lockdown. Using only chalk to draw with, writer and performer Anders Falstie-Jensen recounts the Norse myth of Ragnarok through a unique story of disasters, family and unexpected connections. Winner of “Best of Fest” at the 2022 Nelson Fringe Festival and shortlisted for the 2020 Adam Award for Best New NZ Play, Back to Square One? is based on Anders’s conversations with his 95-year-old grandmother in Denmark during the first lockdown and interviews he conducted with his neighbours about their experiences after finding themselves living in a global pandemic. Back to Square One? premiered in Anders’ driveway in 2020 and has gone on to tour Aotearoa New Zealand extensively. Six different actors have performed this work in various settings. Sometimes indoors, sometimes outdoors. Sometimes for 10 people, sometimes for a hundred. Numbers do not matter for The Rebel Alliance. The opportunity to gather friends and strangers does. Programme Remarks Approximately 60 minutes in duration. No audience seating is available. You are recommended to arrive 15 minutes before the event starts. HKPAX: Uppercut Dance Theater's BENCHED | Hong Kong

Oct 15, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Arts
Take a seat! SIT DOWN! You are on the bench! Time out! All in good time! Are you in the right place? BENCHED is a brutally honest bodily tale about life’s big and very small questions. About settling down. About daring to sit in opposition, about sitting cross-legged, about being sat, put off or benched. About taking, creating, and giving space—and remembering to do so before falling on your pat where the bench ends. We all have the right to the bench, can all relate to the bench, are all right on the bench. The bench breaks down barriers and differences. The bench brings us together. The bench invites reflection. The bench opens for conversation. We all have to sit on the bench sooner or later. A notion of finding one’s place in life and settling down on the bench of life. In BENCHED, five male dancers perform in Johan Kølkjær’s set design of oversized and mobile benches constantly being transformed. Award-winning choreographer Stephanie Thomasen has created the concept and choreography for the performance, where dancers with great musicality, physicality and interaction examine human relationships. The dancers are fluent in a mix of contemporary dance, break, capoeira and street dance genres, all merging into a distinct expression of movement and physical theatre that Uppercut Dance Theater has sought to examine throughout its 40-year history as a dance company in Denmark. Programme Remarks Approximately 45 minutes in duration.Free seating. You are recommended to arrive 15 minutes before the event starts. No admission for latecomers.Programmes are subject to change without prior notice. HKPAX reserves the right to make the final decision regarding the arrangements. “Voices of the Walls" Exhibition | Blue Lotus Gallery

Oct 16–Dec 1, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Exhibitions
Blue Lotus Gallery is pleased to present Voices from the Walled City, a new joint photography exhibition exploring the unique history and culture of Kowloon Walled City through the work of photographers Ian Lambot, Greg Girard, Bianca Tse and Keeping Lee. The exhibition runs from 17 October to 1 December 2024, providing a rich visual history of a controversial and peculiar community. Photographs are an important medium for collective memory and preservation of heritage, especially in the Walled City, a place that will disappear. Few people are willing to venture into the Walled City to document it. However, Ian Lambot and Greg Girard did so in the years leading up to its demolition, culminating in the publication of the book City of Darkness, which has sold over 20,000 copies to date. The series not only preserves the cultural heritage of the walled city through photos and stories, but also provides inspiration for contemporary artists, such as Bianca Tse, who showcases a series of artificial intelligence digital art works, and the latest hit movie "Kowloon Walled City: The Besieged City".

HKPAX: One Fell Swoop Circus's By A Thread | Hong Kong

Oct 17–Oct 18, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Arts
Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. Like the booms and sheets of a sailing ship the performers are hoisted and swung by one another to create striking tableaux and breathtaking dynamics. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a mesmerising negotiation of cause and effect. By A Thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics from some of Australia’s best circus artists. The relationships among ensemble members on stage mimic our everyday relationship as human beings. The acrobatic ensemble is the vehicle to explore ideas of risk and trust, creating an intimate experience around the dangers and joys implicit in engaging with others. More than mere bodies in space, By A Thread is an exploration of tensions physical, emotional and relational. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body. Today, stand-up comedy has become a beloved form of entertainment, appreciated for its humour and straightforward style that directly hits the audience’s funny bone. In Cantonese, stand-up comedy is also known as “dung duk siu”, a term established in Hong Kong in the early 1990s, a literal translation of “stand-up comedy”. Yang Hao, born in Chongqing and currently residing in Hong Kong, has elevated stand-up comedy to a new level. Since 2018, he has ingeniously blended dance theatre with stand-up comedy in Cantonese and Mandarin, presenting a distinctive personal contemporary art form. Evolution is a cross-genre, cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural performance. Evolution is the culmination of years of cross-continental collaboration between two percussion power houses: GRAMMY® Award-winning quartet Third Coast Percussion (US) and creative arts incubator Toolbox Percussion (Hong Kong), with new choreography created and performed by award-winning dancer Alice Ma (Hong Kong) . The programme features music by Chinese composer Austin Yip and American composers Jlin and David Skidmore—including Jlin’s Perspective, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Music. HKPAX: Theatre No Theatre's Han! | Hong Kong

Oct 17–Oct 18, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Arts
“Han! is not an easy word to understand. It has generally been understood as a sort of resentment. But I think it means both sadness and hope at the same time. You can think of Han as the core of life, the pathway leading from birth to death...” — Park Kyon-ni (1994) An ancient dance is performed under a neon light. A virgin ghost stares out from the TV. A baby left alone in an apartment meditates on the nature of solitude. A woman explores memories of her life in relation to the Korean concept of Han. Our heroine moves back and forth between the ancient myths of “Gojoseon,” the era of her dead grandmother, her mother’s past and her own life. Three generations of Korean women bound together in the “resilient silence” of Han. How will she navigate the sea of expectations that life, family, and nation have thrown her way? Through her struggle to understand the complexity of her own Han, which ignites a fire in her mind, we are carried into a dynamic meditation exploring the no man’s land between myth and modernity as we weigh the relation between suffering, sacrifice and destiny.
