Emily MacGregor WHILE THE MUSIC LASTS with Laura Tunbridge | Blackwell's Bookshop
May 26, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
While The Music Lasts
When her father dies, music historian and trombonist Dr Emily MacGregor finds that music has become too much. Listening, let alone playing, is too difficult to cope with, and she can't listen to anything anymore. This is problematic given that she's a broadcaster, writer and academic working with classical music.
It leads her on a journey of discovery: from the arrangement of an Isaac Albéniz piece she finds on her father's guitar stand, through encounters with psychologists, orchestras, summer schools and funeral celebrants, to the lives and works of individual composers who wrote music so often in the midst of loss. What is it about our experience of music that cuts so sharply to the heart of our emotions? And why is it more than any other artform painfully, exquistely crucial in the evoking of memories?
Emily MacGregor
Emily MacGregor is a writer, music historian and broadcaster based at King's College, London. She appears regulary as a music expert on BBC radio.
Laura Tunbridge
Laura Tunbridge, FBA, is a Professor of Music at the University of Oxford, specialising in Beethoven, Robert Schumann, song, and chamber music.

Evening Class: Watercolour Meditation | Modern Art Oxford
May 29, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Explore the metaphysical beauty of watercolour painting as a mark-making technique to document patterns from your life and dreams. Inspired by Barbara Steveni and the Fluxus artists she collaborated with, we’ll use watercolour as a pathway to abstraction –both as a means of expression and as a way to celebrate the patterns and rhythms that shape our thoughts and daily lives.
No painting experience necessary! This session introduces basic watercolour techniques and new approaches to abstraction. It’s an invitation to slow down, reflect, and notice beauty in the smallest details, all while sharing the process in a welcoming environment.
This is the third of three evening classes inspired by our current exhibition Barbara Steveni:
I Find Myself
. Tickets are sold per session to keep things flexible, but we encourage you to attend all three if you can!

Francis Wilson ELECTRIC SPARK with Henry Oliver | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 3, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Electric Spark
The word most commonly used to describe Muriel Spark is 'puzzling'. Spark was a puzzle, and so too are her books. She dealt in word games, tricks, and ciphers; her life was composed of weird accidents, strange coincidences and spooky events. Evelyn Waugh thought she was a saint, Bernard Levin said she was a witch, and she described herself as 'Muriel the Marvel with her X-ray eyes'. Following the clues, riddles, and instructions Spark planted for posterity in her biographies, fiction, autobiography and archives, Frances Wilson aims to crack her code.
Electric Spark
explores not the celebrated Dame Muriel but the apprentice mage discovering her powers. We return to her early years when everything was piled on: divorce, madness, murder, espionage, poverty, skulduggery, blackmail, love affairs, revenge, and a major religious conversion. If this sounds like a novel by Muriel Spark it is because the experiences of the 1940s and 1950s became, alchemically reduced, the material of her art.
Francis Wilson
Frances Wilson is a critic, journalist and the author of numerous biographies and works of non-fiction including
Literary Seductions, The Courtesan's Revenge
and
The Ballad of Dorothy Wordsworth
, which won the Rose Mary Crawshay Prize in 2009.

Adele Zeynep Walton LOGGING OFF | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 9, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Logging Off
We live in a digital world. In the 30 years since we've been online, we've created connections, crossed boundaries and discovered new worlds. We have done things generations before us could never have imagined.
But at what cost?
Growing up as a Gen Z, Adele spent endless hours as a teenager on social media, shaping her view of herself and the world. As a freelance journalist, she has used her social media platforms and digital technology to develop a career in an unfamiliar and competitive industry, benefitting from the opportunities that these spaces can offer. But after losing her sister to online harms, she realised that our current digital world is failing us.
We are an anxious and discontent generation. Our lived realities and our online vulnerabilities are inextricably linked, and this means big business for social media tycoons who want us to stay scrolling at any cost. As Big Tech barons make their billions, capitalising on our emotions, instincts, insecurities and desires, everyday people are losing out.
From workers being fired by algorithms, to online forums dedicated to revenge porn and encouraging suicide, to censorship of marginalised voices and the turbulent impacts of AI,
Logging Off
reveals that our digital world is currently fuelling crises that only empathy, agency and humanity can resolve. This book is a call for a radical reclamation of our digital world, for a more humane future that empowers us all.
Adele Zeynep Walton
Adele Zeynep Walton is a British Turkish journalist, online safety campaigner and the author of Logging Off: The Human Cost of Our Digital World. Adele has channelled a personal loss into advocating for a safer digital world for young people. She is a member of Bereaved Families for Online Safety and a youth ambassador for People Vs Big Tech.
Adele is also the co-founder of Logging Off Club, which brings people together offline at phone free events to reconnect and promote connection, curiosity and wellness.

Jay Griffiths HOW ANIMALS HEAL US with Hugh Warwick | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 10, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
How Animals Heal Us
Pet-owners and animal-lovers instinctively know that animals heal. This book offers the evidence, drawing widely on scientific discoveries, history, and Indigenous knowledge.
We meet a pot-bellied pig who saved her owner's life, lions who guarded a girl from kidnappers, dolphins and whales rescuing people in danger, and dogs who can smell cancer and phone the Emergency Services.
Animal sounds, from insects to birdsong and the purring of cats, are directly medicinal and their presence can heal the pain of loneliness. Animals, including donkeys, can be natural therapists for the hurt psyche, alleviating trauma, fear and depression.
In this original, revelatory and exuberant book, Jay Griffiths explores how animals can have a role in every level of healing, from the individual to the collective, guiding us in how we might create societies that are healthier, fairer and kinder. Wolves may be teachers of ethics; monkeys and dogs can object to unfairness and bees take collective decisions. Animals are irresistible medicine for a healthy culture, animating the arts with spectacular vitality and verve, as poetry knows.
Open-hearted, playful and wise,
How Animals Heal Us
puts animals at the heart of a restorative vision of health.
Jay Griffiths
Jay Griffiths was born in Manchester and studied English Literature at Oxford University. She spent a couple of years living in a shed on the outskirts of Epping Forest and has travelled the world, but for many years she has been based in Wales.
Hugh Warwick
Hugh Warwick has been a hedgehog obsessive for over twenty years, ever since an expedition to the Orkney Islands in the 1986. From radio-tracking hogs in Devon, to working with HogWatch to track the current numbers of hedgehogs in the British Isles, Hugh was also involved in the research which was instrumental in halting the hedgehog cull in the Uists. He makes numerous appearances to talk about hedgehogs, and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society have now made him a trustee and a life-time member in recognition of his contribution.

About me
Hi, I'm Anna, a registered Nutrional Therapy Practitioner based in Headington, Oxford. In my 20s, I left my desk job to retrain as a chef, before packing my bags to work in kitchens around the globe. Over the years, I’ve gathered recipes, culinary tips and kitchen shortcuts I love to share.
As I reached my own middle age, I began noticing how my patterns of eating had significant (negative) affects on my digestion, energy levels, and even my mood. This sparked an interest to understand better the science of food, in particular nutrition & I studied a four-year diploma in functional medicine at the renowned Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London, graduating with distinction.
I now blend my culinary skills with my nutritional knowledge and share great food, easily assembled, to help people get back on track with their health, wellness, and confidence in the kitchen.

We live in a very ancient landscape, but
it has not always looked the way it looks today
.
In most of Oxfordshire the pattern of fields, hedges and roads was re-drawn afresh during the period when
Parliamentary enclosure was wiping out the medieval pattern of open fields
with their groups of strips in ridge and furrow.
Some parishes had been enclosed and became largely deserted after the Black Death
and through the 15th and 16th centuries, and
in some places the farmers agreed between themselves
to enclose some or all of their open-field land.
Join deborah Hayter to discover how
the long-drawn out processes of enclosure gave us the hedged landscape
of fields
that we see today
.
Complimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment.
Tickets cost £5 and are available online via Eventbrite (booking fee applies) or at the Museum shop.
Sales from tickets help support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities, community engagement projects, schools workshops, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces.
Deborah Hayter
’s first degree was in English, but in later life she became a historian, having done a diploma course in English Local History followed by an MA at the Centre for English Local History at Leicester. Since then she has taught many courses at OUDCE and is often asked to speak to local history societies. She has lived most of her life in North Oxfordshire, but now lives just across the Cherwell in south Northamptonshire. She is first and foremost a landscape historian, looking to answer the question ‘Why do places look like they do?’, but she has also taught courses on village history and on the history of poor relief, which is a particular interest.

Join acclaimed pianist and Kettner Concerts co-artistic director Cristian Sandrin for an extraordinary evening showcasing Beethoven's complete Opus 2 Piano Sonatas—the young composer's bold declaration and his emerging unique voice within the musical world of Vienna.
Written to challenge the mastery of Mozart and Haydn, these three ambitious sonatas marked Beethoven's explosive debut in the world of piano sonatas. Experience the revolutionary spirit of young Beethoven as his unique voice emerges through brilliant technical passages, dramatic emotional contrasts, and surprising innovations that would forever change classical music.
Witness the complete cycle performed in the Holywell Music Room, the prime venue in the heart of Oxford—a rare opportunity to trace the evolution of Beethoven's genius across three remarkable works that announced the arrival of one of history's greatest musical revolutionaries.
Programme:
L van Beethoven:
Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1
Allegro
Adagio
Menuetto: Allegretto
Prestissimo
The F minor sonata opens the cycle with a restless energy. Its first movement, inspired by Mozart's K. 457 sonata in the same key, features dramatic silences and sudden dynamic contrasts. The lyrical Adagio provides momentary respite before the traditional Menuetto and the fiery final Prestissimo, which pushes the technical boundaries of piano playing for its time.
Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 2, No. 2
Allegro vivace
Largo appassionato
Scherzo: Allegretto
Rondo: Grazioso
The A major sonata expands in scale and ambition. Its brilliant opening movement demonstrates Beethoven's mastery of Classical forms while hinting at new directions. The profound Largo appassionato moves with the dignity of a slow march, while the Scherzo replaces the traditional Menuetto with greater rhythmic playfulness. The elegant Rondo finale showcases Beethoven's gift for graceful melody.
Sonata No. 3 in C major, Op. 2, No. 3
Allegro con brio
Adagio
Scherzo: Allegro
Allegro assai
The cycle culminates in the virtuosic C major sonata, the most technically demanding of the three. Its expansive first movement rivals a concerto in brilliance, while the serene Adagio explores rich harmonic territories. The playful Scherzo leads to an exhilarating finale that pushes the performer's technique to its limits, highlighting Beethoven's own legendary prowess as a pianist.
Biography:
Born into a family of musicians from Bucharest, Cristian Sandrin has been surrounded by classical music all his life. His frequent visits to the historic Romanian Atheneum concert hall and his attendances at the prestigious Enescu Festival shaped his musical aspirations from early childhood. Years later, he would have his own debut at the Atheneum at the age of 13.

His passion for Mozart’s piano concertos led him to direct from the keyboard several concertos during Summer Festivals at the Royal Academy of Music, as well as for the official opening of the Angela Burgess Recital Hall. From 2018–2020 he was privileged to tour the UK as an artist of the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. Additionally, He is a scholarship holder of the Imogen Cooper Music Trust benefiting from her unique one-to-one guidance and mentorship since 2017. He graduated in 2019 from the Royal Academy of Music, receiving a DipRAM, MMus later being part of the prestigious Advanced Diploma programme.
In 2023 he has been invited to become the co-Artistic Director of the much-admired Kettner Concerts which are held in the David Lloyd George Hall of the National Liberal Club, Rachmaninov’s favourite London recital room and the venue where he performed his European farewell concert.
In 2021 Cristian travelled to Romania for his debut with the acclaimed George Enescu Philharmonic performing Mozart's K503 Piano Concerto in C major at the country's foremost music venue: The Romanian Atheneum.Since 2020, Cristian has performed challenging solo programmes including Beethoven's last three sonatas and Bach's Goldberg Variations in famous venues across Europe from Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the Radio Hall in Bucharest to London’s LSO St Luke’s and Holywell Music Room Oxford, Sinfonia Smith Square and Sala Puccini in Milan. SOLD OUT Jacinda Ardern A DIFFERENT KIND OF POWER | The Sheldonian Theatre
Jun 15, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
What if we could redefine leadership? What if kindness came first?
The Right Honourable Dame Jacinda Ardern was elected the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand at the age of thirty-seven, becoming the country’s youngest Prime Minister in more than 150 years. Ardern exemplifies a new kind of leadership—proving that leaders can be caring, empathetic, and effective. After becoming a global icon, she’s ready to share the remarkable story of how a Mormon girl plagued by self-doubt made political history and changed our assumptions of what a global leader can be.
Joined by special guests, Ardern will reflect on the struggles, triumphs, and deeply personal experiences that shaped her leadership style and what she’s learned along the way.
Every ticket includes a copy of Ardern’s new memoir,
A Different Kind of Power.
The Right Honourable Dame Jacinda Ardern was elected the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand at the age of thirty-seven, becoming the country’s youngest Prime Minister in more than 150 years. Since leaving office, Ardern has established the Field Fellowship on empathetic leadership. She is a Senior Fellow at Harvard University, continues to work on climate action, and is the Patron of the Christchurch Call to Action to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online. Ardern also works on a number of projects that support women and girls, but considers her greatest roles to be those she will hold for life, including that of mum and proud New Zealander.
