Queer Fantasy Book Launch: Pearly Gates by Bonnie Solomon | Village Well Books & Coffee
Jun 5, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Boulevard
Join us at Village Well Books & Coffee for the launch of Bonnie Solomon's debut novel Pearly Gates! At a time when LGBTQ+ voices are being silenced, Pearly Gates offers a bold, affirming, and heartfelt story that champions diverse perspectives and celebrates the resilience, creativity, and inclusiveness of the queer community - just in time for Pride Month. So come celebrate Pride Month with Bonnie and pals, and dive into Pearly Gates, a heartfelt, playful romp ! (Kirkus Reviews) About the author: Bonnie Solomon is a novelist and screenwriter with a passion for crafting humorous, uplifting stories in magical settings. Cozy fantasy and hopepunk are her favorite genres. A Midwest native and seasoned Hollywood professional, Bonnie brings a wealth of experience in feature film development with industry giants like Walden Media and DreamWorks Animation. Her notes have gone into many DWA movies, including Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Wild Robot. As a creative consultant, she’s written film and TV treatments/scripts, edited novels, and coached writers from outlines through final drafts. As a queer writer, Bonnie is committed to authentic and aspirational LGBTQ representation – which she believes is even more important in our current political/cultural climate. When she’s not writing, you can find her cuddling the cat, shaking it loose on the dance floor, or finding the best latte in LA. About the book: A dead drag queen. A cozy café. A shady deal—and an unexpected family. Deceased drag queen Pearly Gates has the worst job in the afterlife: cosmic sanitation worker. When her soulmate leaves her, claiming she’s incapable of growth, Pearly hatches a plan to win him back. By striking an illicit bargain to take over the caseload of a burnt-out spirit guide, she’ll prove she’s worthy of love—and a second chance. Her mission takes her to Thunderbolt Books & Coffee, a small-town bookshop café haunted by a 1920s burlesque dancer. Tasked with guiding a grieving widow, a terminally ill college graduate, and a struggling trans woman, Pearly uses wit, charm, and a touch of magic to help them heal and find love. Then she discovers the café’s owner is her soulmate reincarnated. As one of Pearly’s charges falls for the café owner, she faces a dilemma: be the good guide she promised to become or sabotage the relationship. Between saving the café, dodging bumbling afterlife detectives, and surviving a lip-sync battle with her own body double, Pearly must decide what matters most. If she fails, she risks losing everything—her job, her soulmate, even her soul. Pearly Gates is an uplifting LGBTQ+ fantasy celebrating queer identity, found family, new love, and second chances—even after life’s final curtain call.

Writers Bloc Presents Molly Jong-Fast in Conversation With Lisa Kudrow | The Ebell of Los Angeles - Dining Room
Jun 9, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Boulevard
HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. While it would be so interesting and fun to be the child of the wildly famous and groundbreaking author and literary lion, Erica Jong, it presented some painfully difficult challenges to Molly Jong-Fast, Erica's daughter. Jong-Fast has her family's great creative DNA, being a brilliant writer herself, who is now focusing on political writing and podcasting. But her new book, How to Lose Your Mother, is deeply and utterly personal. It is impossible to put down. Molly Jong-Fast reveals the struggle with her internationally renowned mother's dementia, while dealing with her own husband's cancer diagnosis at the same time. How can this be funny and unique? Trust us. Jong-Fast knows how to tell a tough story with searing honesty and stunning humor , weaving in the complications and struggles of being Erica Jong's daughter. The ravages of memory loss and ageing are cruel facts of life. But in Molly Jong-Fast's hands, they're something new altogether. In conversation with comedy queen Lisa Kudrow. You know the award-winning Lisa Kudrow from her ten-year run as Phoebe Buffay on the seminal sitcom Friends, for which she won Emmys and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She has appeared on countless major comedies, including Mad About You; Grace & Frankie; and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. She is also part of the team behind the critically acclaimed series, Web Therapy, as well as The Comeback, among so many other shows. Limited parking onsite. We recommend rideshares and carpooling. Please allow time to find parking. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? As a nonprofit organization, Writers Bloc Presents relies on support from people like you. Help us to remain a strong community as we continue to celebrate literature by authors we love, and explore critical contemporary issues. Please donate here. No refunds or exchanges on tickets or books. Books must be picked up on the night of the program.

Through the course of the evening, writer Sarah Ens will lead us through several journaling-type exercises designed to help you express your relationship to landscape and creation. Weather-permitting, sound artist Jami Reimer will lead us on a community deep listening exercise on a walk through Assiniboine Forest, to explore how sound impacts our sense of place. Throughout our journey additional artists will join us to share how they “listen” through drawing, paint, and photography. Leave with your individual artworks and much inspiration, with a deeper connection to place and landscape. Please note: participants should come prepared with a notebook/sketchbook, pencil(s) and supplies to spend time outdoors in Assiniboine Forest (such as insect repellent and sturdy shoes)

Weight in the Fingertips: Music Book Talk w/ Author Inna Faliks | Village Well Books & Coffee
Jun 11, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Boulevard
Join us at Village Well Books & Coffee for a discussion of Weight in the Fingertips with author Inna Faliks! Internationally renowned concert pianist Inna Faliks, professor and head of piano at UCLA, reads from her acclaimed memoir, Weight in the Fingertips: A Musical Odyssey from Soviet Ukraine to the World Stage. The reading will be followed by a Q&A with music journalist Thomas Small and a signing. The memoir has received glowing reviews from many publications including LA Review of Books, and Pianist Magazine states, Weight in the Fingertips shows that Inna Faliks is not only a great pianist, but also a talented author who manages to portray a character accurately in just a few sentences, convey the mood of a piece of music or describe a funny or sad event. Above all, Weight in the Fingertips is a declaration of love for music. About the participants: “Adventurous and passionate” (The New Yorker), Ukrainian-born pianist Inna Faliks has established herself as one of the most communicative, and poetic artists of her generation. She has made a name for herself through commanding performances of standard piano repertoire, as well genre-bending, interdisciplinary projects, and inquisitive work with contemporary composers. Her new memoir, Weight in the Fingertips, A Musical Odyssey from Soviet Ukraine to the World Stage, was published by Globe Pequot Press in October 2023. Find more information at innafaliks.com. Thomas Aujero Small is the co-author of Experience the Sublime, an upcoming book on the intersection of music and architecture, written in collaboration with acclaimed architectural author Michael Webb and set for publication by ORO Editions in 2026. A longtime contributor to the Paris-based journal Concertonet, Small has been writing about classical music since 2005. He was awarded a prestigious NEA Fellowship in music journalism at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. In addition to his work as a writer and cultural advocate, he recently completed a term as Mayor of Culver City, having served on the City Council from 2016 to 2020. About the book: Before she knew she was Ukrainian, Soviet, or Jewish, Inna Faliks knew she was a musician. Growing up in the city of Odessa, the piano became her best friend, and she explored the brilliant, intricate puzzles of Bach’s music and learned to compose under her mother’s watchful eye. At ten, Faliks and her parents moved to Chicago as part of the tide of Jewish refugees who fled the USSR for the West in the 1980s. During the months-long immigration process, she would silently practice on kitchen tables while imagining a full set of piano keys beneath her fingertips. In Weight in the Fingertips, Faliks gives a globe-trotting account of her upbringing as a child prodigy in a Soviet state, the perils of immigration, the struggle of assimilating as an American, years of training with teachers, and her slow and steady rise in the world of classical music. With a warm and playful style, she helps non-musicians understand the experience of becoming a world-renowned concert pianist. The places she grew up, the books she read, the poems she memorized as a child all connect to her sound at the piano, and the way she hears and shapes a musical phrase illuminate classical music and elite performance. She also explores how a person’s humanity makes their art honest and their voice unique, and how the life-long challenge of retaining that voice is fueled by a balance between being a great musician and being a human being. Throughout, Faliks provides powerful insights into the role of music in a world of conflict, change, and hope for a better tomorrow.
