Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers
4.3/543 Reviews
Distant relatives is the perfect place to stay in Kilifi. The whole staff is very friendly and make you feel like family. My wife and I arrived during off season, so when we showed up at 04:30 there was already a room available even though our check in was technically not until 12:00 that day. Mohammed at the bar made sure we were taken care of whenever we wanted something to eat or drink. The food and drink prices were reasonable, after 5 days we only spent around $100 USD. The pool was our favorite spot to sit and relax while reading our books. But reception was also able to help us call a Tuk Tuk into town and to the white sandy beaches and that was about $10 USD round trip. Beware of the Vervet monkeys though, they live in the trees surrounding the property and they will steal your food if you turn your eyes for even just a second! The toilets outside the Bandas are composting toilets, and that isn’t for everyone, but they do have traditional flush toilets as well near the pool area.
Silver Palm Spa & Resort

Pros: Beautiful hotel built with it's locality at heart. The Swahili architecture in the rooms especially is top notch. Big, clean rooms with views and balcony. Great staff, Amisi at reception and George at the restaurant were exceptional. Kilifi itself is beautiful so would visit again. P/s - if you can, please visit the spa! Cons: Food was average (buffet dinner and breakfast). These have great room for improvement.
Temple Point Resort

We had decided for NYE we wanted to do something special and we had been seeing a lot of Temple Point on Instagram and knew that that was the place for us to be for our New Year break. We live in Kenya and know the coast well but wanted to try somewhere new. Keeping it brief, we paid for the Deluxe room which promises a lot and I can confirm there is no need to pay for a more expensive room as they are all practically the same (there is no VIP check in and check out, there is no entertainment system, no executive lounge or facilities, no separate living room basically everything on the website is false information and not as you will receive the room). As soon as we were given our room we assumed there must have been a mistake and they simply gave us the wrong room, to our complete shock they advised that this is the room we paid for. Naturally we were not happy and spoke to Eunice, who advised us that the photos online are only 2-3 of the rooms, they are not all like that and we have been given a room that is not photographed. She also found it appropriate to laugh at us when we were showing her what was explained on the website, and that is what we went by when making our booking. It is categorically unlawful to state all Deluxe rooms come with these things and views and then give a room which quite frankly is the worst I have stayed in within Kenya. There was no compromise from the team until our third day when they said we could move rooms but at this stage we only had 2 more days left and quite frankly there was no point in doing so. Putting the room aside, throughout the resort it is dated and not well maintained and you can see all they have invested in is the Gym and Lichthaus (both which are great, no arguments there), it is a hotel which needs attention urgently. The staff everyday would ask us to pay for breakfast when we were on a half board, and everyday it would be the same frustrating conversation. There is no accountability by anyone in the resort, a simple apology and acknowledgment of false advertising would have gone a long way. Don't make the same mistake as us, and there are much much much better hotels in Watamu to stay in.
Rafiki Village

I've stayed at this property before but hotel standards have really dropped. Despite having a booking for a week, I was first put in one of the worst rooms (would really not call it a villa). Room, I guess had not been occupied in a while (I guess as I was a solo local traveler, reception felt I'd accept a 'subpar room'???, was welcomed by swarms of mosquitoes; on and off sewage smell/whif near the entrance. Next afternoon (after complaining) I was moved to a better villa, however with a sagging mattress, after 2 days my mattress was changed by the housekeeping steward who took pity of my plight. Villa phone didnt work, despite multiple requests to front desk eventually fixed on 3rd day (needed working phone to call restaurant for room service, had to walk to restaurant to place order defeating purpose of room service) Meals are below average; extremely limited breakfast range and menu options. Extremely frustrating as I was working and could not get away to restaurants. Requested a late 12PM checkout - reception refused was even willing to pay for it. Note - I previously had to wait till 3PM to get access to the 'better villa' as guest was checking out late, yet hotel could not extend a 12PM checkout for me? Last straw, I gladly left hotel before 10AM and went to next door hotel; that has better guest appreciation and food quality! Pros: Amazing beach view, Terry at the Spa was fantastic, housekeeping stewards are extremely pleasant. Cons: Food, quality of rooms, thread bare linens, on and off 'whif' of sewage as your walking by the gardens, hotel standards have really dropped - definitely not value for money. Would not recommend or return!

TERRIBLE VACATION This is the first time I have given such a low rating, I usually give it a 10. But this hotel is just a terrible case! We chose here at the Booking based on reviews that, apparently, were greatly exaggerated. But, everything is in order. Firstly, as soon as we got to the hotel, the woman at the reception “delighted” us with the news that they were all booked and had some kind of overbooking, so on our last day from here we would leave and spend it at some their friend’s hotel. Seriously? Will we spend our last day on the ocean moving to your friends? We said strong “no”, it's your problem. Those woman called Justin, the hotel owner, and he said, well, ok, we’ll solve this problem somehow. Justin, for the future, if there is such a problem, then guests are not presented with such a choice. For moving “to friends” you need to offer something, a couple of free dinners, an excursion, money as compensation. You are running a business, and you should know this. Further, worse, our toilet was broken, after complaining, Justin called a plumber. We woke up at night and the entire floor was covered in water that was flowing from the toilet bowl. On the first day, the plumber changed the toilet, but the water did not flush anything, on the second day the situation did not improve and Justin called the plumber again. So again, we watched in the room as he fixed the toilet. On a good note, they replaced our old shower cap with a new one. Whoever will be staying in our FUNZI room, don't thank us! On the fourth day, the roof in the room above my bed collapsed. We got used to all sorts of beetles and scolopendras, but still asked for it to be repaired. We waited 2 days. As for silence and relaxation, it’s simply not here. At night, the noise from discos makes it difficult to sleep, at least for us, on the second floor. There is also no time to rest during the day, the owner is building a kitchen right in front of the rooms, there is constant noise and it gives you a headache. I hope that the rooms on the second floor will not be rented out, because all the smells will go into the rooms. There is almost always music playing in the hotel, but since the equipment is very cheap, all the bass went to us on the second floor. If you can hear music on the first floor, then on the second you can only hear boom-boom. Combined with the kitchen being built, we had a constant headache. A couple of times the owner came with friends, as if to his summer house, music was playing loudly, they were playing billiards. Mike, Justin's uncle, was trying to kiss my sister. What is this anyway? How dare you treat guests like this and exhibit such behavior? Justin, the owner, stopped greeting us altogether on the third day and even noticing us. This is hospitality. But when three families arrived and occupied six rooms, there were hugs, friendly conversations, and they even put new ketchup bottles in the restaurant. Let me add, it was my birthday! In all hotels they al
