Cherry Blossom Viewing in Sendai - Shiroishi Riverbank's "Hitome Senbonzakura"
Located in Funaoka Town, south of Sendai, the Shiroishi Riverbank stretches for eight kilometers and is home to over a thousand cherry trees, including the famous Somei Yoshino variety. Known as "Hitome Senbonzakura," this spot is one of Japan's premier cherry blossom viewing destinations.
Whether strolling along the riverbank, gazing from the Senbon Bridge, or enjoying the view from the ruins of Funaoka Castle, visitors are sure to be awestruck by the vast sea of cherry blossoms.
To enjoy this scenic route, start from Sendai Station and take the JR Tohoku Main Line to Funaoka Station, a journey of about 30 minutes. From there, walk along the Shiroishi Riverbank towards Ogawara Station, covering approximately three kilometers of blooming cherry blossoms. The scenery is reminiscent of the famous "Sewari-tei" and leaves a lasting impression!
Sunset Spot 🌅coincidentally after seeing the cherry blossoms
#Sunset Spot #100TravelTips
🍁 The story is... I woke up late and didn't make it to see the cherry blossoms at "Funaoka Joshi Park" in time, so I came out in the morning and walked around to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom.
🌅 While I was about to return to Sendai by train, I had to wait to board at Funaoka Station. At that moment, the sun was setting.
Actually, since I took the picture of the 1,000 cherry trees lined up along the river, I felt that the light was very beautiful.
🍂 Normally, Funaoka Station is already beautiful to begin with. When the last light of the day shines orange on the station roof and the real houses of the people of Funaoka, it becomes even more beautiful. It has become our unintentional "Sunset Spot".
📍Location: Funaoka Station
Funaoka Joshi park!!
Funaoka Joshi park !! Funaoka Joshi Park is the only park in Miyagi Prefecture to be listed in the “Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites of Japan”. A small automated monorail runs through the tunnel of cherry blossoms. Funaoka Peace Kannon is situated at the top of the mountain, where visitors can also enjoy a magnificent view. Over 200,000 people flock to the park at the beginning of April for the infamous “Shibata Cherry Blossoms Festival”. But , when I went there yesterday, all cherry blossoms was over and some left over late blooms only left . But is famous for their sunset over the hill and panoramic view over Shibata prefecture, in Miyagi . There is no transportation between station and the park usually. But they have shuttle bus while cherry blossoms festival and now was over . So, I walk 15mins from Funaoka station to the park and walk up to the hill and use small monorail to go up and see the surrounding and walk down slowly before sunset because It was remote area and I don’t want to stay too late and I need to walk back to the station to catch the train to Sendai . If you are in this area in cherry blossoms season , make sure catch full blooms on this mountain to enjoy. See you all on the other side of the world 🌎!!

Direct flight from Osaka to Tohoku: Flower Hill at Funaoka Castle Ruins Park
From Osaka, you can choose domestic flights with shorter travel times to Sendai Airport or Fukushima Airport. The flight takes approximately 2 hours and costs around 30,000 yen.
Visitors can take a 305-meter-long inclined railway from the parking lot to the park's summit. However, the railway was out of service on the day, so walking up to the summit was the only option. Before reaching the summit, there is a 1,000-square-meter garden built in 2010 as part of Shibata Town's initiative to create a "City of Flowers." The planting and design of the garden were entirely managed by Shibata Town residents. Here, you can admire over a hundred varieties of seasonal flowers and flowering trees, including tulips and roses, although there were fewer blooming varieties on the day of the visit. At the summit stands the 24-meter-tall Funaoka Peace Kannon statue, offering panoramic views of Shibata Town, the Zao mountain range, and the Pacific Ocean.
Travel from Osaka to Tohoku for Cherry Blossoms: Hitome Senbonzakura
During spring, approximately a thousand cherry trees bloom spectacularly, covering the entire mountain like a pink blanket. Along the banks of the Shiroishi River, the cherry trees align beautifully, creating a breathtaking view of thousands of cherry blossoms in full bloom, known as "Hitome Senbonzakura." Every year, from early to late April, the "Shibata Cherry Blossom Festival" is held, attracting over 270,000 visitors from within and outside the prefecture. Additionally, visitors can enjoy hydrangeas in June and July, red spider lilies in September and October, and plum blossoms and daffodils in March. The area offers stunning seasonal flowers all year round.
Transportation:
From Osaka, you can take a domestic flight to Sendai Airport, with one-way tickets starting from a few hundred yen. The flight takes only two hours. From Sendai Airport, transfer to the subway to reach Sendai Station.
Hitome Senbonzakura is located between Funaoka Station and Ogawara Station on the Tohoku Line. After exiting the station, it's just a short walk to the cherry blossom viewing area.

Tokyo to Tohoku Guide: Cherry Blossom Viewing at Funaoka Park
Funaoka Castle Ruins Park in Shibata Town is one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots. Alongside the famous "Hitome Senbonzakura" (meaning "a thousand cherry trees at a glance") that stretches 8 kilometers along the Shiroishi River, these locations are celebrated nationwide. During the cherry blossom season in April, approximately 200,000 visitors from across Japan come to admire the scenery. Unfortunately, during the visit mentioned, only about 10% of the cherry blossoms were in bloom, so the riverside was not explored. Instead, the summit was visited to enjoy the view of the Zao mountain range.
From JR Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to Sendai Station. Then transfer to the JR Tohoku Main Line for approximately 30 minutes to Funaoka Station. From there, it's about a 5-minute walk to the park.

Hidden Sakura Haven – Yamazakiyama Park’s Blooming Secret
Tucked away in Nagoya, Yamazakiyama Park is a lesser-known cherry blossom paradise waiting to charm your spring senses. With soft pink petals blanketing the walking trails and creating floral tunnels overhead, this peaceful gem offers serenity without the crowds. As families picnic under blooming trees and children run freely, the calmness of nature embraces you. The gentle slopes offer panoramic views of the sakura canopy below — a truly photogenic sight! Perfect for a quiet hanami escape, Yamazakiyama Park turns into a pastel dream each season. Add this hidden beauty to your unforgettable #cherryblossom25 itinerary and let the petals lead the way.
Japan's Cherry Blossom Paradise - Shiroishi Riverbank's Hitome Senbonzakura
Having seen cherry blossoms in many places across Japan, the Hitome Senbonzakura at Shiroishi Riverbank in Miyagi Prefecture is, in my opinion, the ultimate cherry blossom viewing spot in Japan!
1️⃣ Fewer Crowds: This is incredibly important. Famous cherry blossom spots in Tokyo and Kyoto are often overcrowded, but Shiroishi Riverbank is much less crowded. You can find a quiet spot on the grassy slope to sit, enjoy a leisurely picnic, and occasionally encounter someone playing guitar on the slope—it's truly relaxing.
2️⃣ Large Scale: The Shiroishi Riverbank is quite long. For comparison, Kyoto's Sewari-tei is about 1.5 kilometers long and only has cherry trees on one side of the river. In contrast, Shiroishi Riverbank stretches over 3 kilometers, with cherry trees planted on both sides of the river. When viewed from the mountain, the cherry blossoms against the backdrop of distant snow-capped mountains are absolutely breathtaking.
📍 Transportation: Take the JR train to Funaoka Station. From there, you can walk to the riverbank. I also recommend visiting Funaoka Castle Ruins Park, which features a charming cherry blossom cable car on the mountain. There's also an observation deck on the mountain where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the cherry blossoms along the riverbank.
⏰ Timing: I visited around April 12th, which was the peak bloom period. The peak bloom time varies each year, so it's best to check in advance.
Funaoka Castle Park: A Premier Cherry Blossom Spot Near Sendai
Shibata Town, located in the suburbs near Sendai, is known for its scenic cherry blossom spots due to its undulating terrain and proximity to rivers. Among these, the comprehensive park at the site of Funaoka Castle stands out as a premier cherry blossom viewing destination.
The park boasts over 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees, along with approximately 16 varieties of cherry blossoms transplanted from various regions across Japan. In April, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the entire cherry blossom hill is painted in shades of pink.
Visitors can take a cable car to the mountaintop and observation deck to enjoy a panoramic view of the snow-capped Zao Mountain Range, the Shiroishi River, the famous "Hitome Senbonzakura" (a thousand cherry trees at a glance), and the vibrant blossoms within Funaoka Castle Park. The breathtaking scenery is truly a feast for the eyes.
From Sendai Station, it takes about 30 minutes by JR train to reach Funaoka Station. After alighting, a 15-minute walk will lead you to Funaoka Castle Park.
A Blossoming Fortress: Sakura Serenity at Funaoka Castle Ruins Park
#cherryblossom25
Perched atop a gentle hill in Shiroishi City,Funaoka Castle Ruins Park transforms into a breathtaking sakura haven each spring. The park’s 1,000 cherry trees, primarily somei-yoshino and shidare-zakura(weeping cherries), blanket the historic grounds in soft pink hues, creating a striking contrast against the stone remnants of the 17th-century castle. Walking along the winding paths, visitors are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, with the Zao Mountain Range framing the scene. At night, the trees are illuminated, casting an ethereal glow over the ruins and making it a favorite spot for yozakura(nighttime sakura viewing). The park’s tranquil atmosphere, combined with its rich samurai history, offers a uniquely poetic hanami experience—where fleeting beauty meets enduring legacy.
Tip: Visit in early to mid-April for peak blooms, and don’t miss the nearby Shiroishi River’s Hitome Senbonzakura for a double sakura adventure!

A Sea of Blossoms: Sakura Magic at Shiroishi's Hitome Senbonzakura
#cherryblossom25
Standing on the banks of the Shiroishi River, I was mesmerized by the breathtaking spectacle of Hitome Senbonzakura—"a thousand cherry trees at a glance.Stretching over 8 kilometres, over a thousand pale pink somei-yoshino sakura line the river, their delicate petals reflecting in the tranquil water like a watercolor painting come to life. The air was sweet with the faint fragrance of blossoms, and every breeze sent flurries of petals dancing through the sunlight. Locals and visitors strolled along the paths, picnicking under the floral canopy, while the distant peaks of the Zao Mountains framed the scene in serene majesty. As the sun set, paper lanterns glowed softly, casting a dreamy haze over the blossoms—transforming the riverbank into a scene straight out of a fairy tale. This was more than just hanami; it was a moment of pure, fleeting magic.
🇯🇵Sendai Have you ever seen the cherry blossom tunnel by the river? 🌸
Shiraishikawa Ichimoku Senbonzakura is a great place to enjoy cherry blossoms in the suburbs of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, and is selected as one of the top 100 cherry blossoms in Japan! 🎀 This is one of the must-see attractions I recommend when visiting Sendai! ✨Just like the name means, there are 1,000 cherry trees🌳
During the cherry blossom season from early to mid-April every year, more than 1,000 cherry trees are planted on both sides of the 8-kilometer-long Shiraishi River, forming a straight and spectacular cherry blossom tunnel, which is really amazing! Sendai has fewer people, and the atmosphere is peaceful. You won’t find it hard to take photos with so many people. 🎀 You can also take a boat ride or rent a bicycle to enjoy the riverside.🚲

Shiraishi-gawa Tsutsumi Sakura – The Tohoku Region's Most Epic Blossom Avenue
#cherryblossom25
Stretching 8 km along the Shiraishi River in Miyagi Prefecture, this is one of Japan’s longest and most dramatic cherry blossom spots—with 1,200+ Somei-Yoshino trees forming a tunnel of pink, all backed by the snow-capped Zao Mountain Range.
🌸 Why It’s Unique
✔ Natural Grandeur – The "Snow Wall Effect": Blossoms contrast with Zao’s lingering snow (early-mid April).
✔ *Bike-Friendly – Rent cycles to glide under petals with mountain views.
✔ Less Touristed – No foreign crowds like Kyoto; mostly Japanese photographers and locals.

🏔️"One glance at the distant, a thousand cherry blossoms in full view" I would like to call the Shiraishi River Bank the Pro version of the Back Ware Bank in the Tohoku region of Japan. The light shines on the thousands of Yoshino trees on both sides and the snow-capped mountains of the Zao mountain range in the distance, creating the spring scenery of Sendai Ogawara-machi and the picture of the thousand cherry blossoms under the snow-capped mountains.

🚃 During the cherry blossom season, the limited edition "Kazeko" sightseeing train runs between Sendai and Ogawara, becoming the target of many railway photography enthusiasts. The operating time and frequency of each year need to be specifically checked. In 24 years, there is one train every hour at a certain time period on certain days. One round trip can be photographed twice in different directions.
🏯 Funaoka Castle Park Hike up the mountainside to the observation deck where you can overlook the giant skybridge and the Snow Mountain Thousand Cherry Blossom Railway.
🎢 The popular "Flower Fairy" (if you have enough time, you can choose to take the cherry blossom train up the mountain. There is a giant Guanyin statue on the top of the mountain). 🚨Private camera position A wide river with a small waterfall, thousands of cherry blossoms on both sides, and the Zao Mountain Range in the back. This camera position is truly the 🌸King of Cherry Blossoms!! You can take pictures of the sunset over the snowy mountains.
🥁 After sunset, we returned to Ogawara Station. There were night cherry blossoms and a cherry blossom festival night market outside the station. The tree shape and lights were unique and very photogenic!!
🐂 After a day of running, I rushed back to Sendai and had a delicious Sendai beef tongue! (Sendai recommends Tanya Zenjiro and edamame special drink)
Tip: You can also go in the opposite direction from Ogawara to Funaoka, and it is also a unique experience to go backwards with all the seats!!

#Sendai cherry blossoms
Dear travel experts, friends who like to take pictures of beautiful scenery, today I must share with you my awesome experience of returning to Tokyo from Sendai! 😍
Although it started to rain slightly when we set off, the weather was good and the sun was shining brightly after walking for a while. We were lucky enough to be able to see the Ichimoku Senbonzakura in Shiraishi. That road is full of cherry blossoms in full bloom, and you can't see the end at a glance. It's really "a long cherry blossom road, every step is romantic". The whole avenue turned into a sea of pink flowers, petals flying all over the sky, as if they had stepped into a fairyland.
The best part is to capture the moment of the train shuttling through the sea of flowers, the train "wuwu" whistle, accompanied by the falling cherry blossoms, this screen is so beautiful that you can take it directly as a postcard! After strolling around, you are not afraid of being hungry. There are many good food stalls next to it. Buy a snack, sit down and enjoy the breeze, slowly enjoying the beautiful scenery in front of you, it is simply a great enjoyment of life.
If you are planning to go to Japan, don't miss this #Shiraishikawaba Ichimoku Senbonzakura, you can find it by searching the map. You have to go to Shiraishi once in your life to feel the beauty of this spring-only beauty. #Sendai #Shiraishi #Sendai Must Visit #Japan #Cherry Blossoms #Cherry Blossom Season Collect now

Cherry blossoms dance, spring dyes Shiroishi River.
Spring breeze gently blows, strolling through the thousand cherry trees of Sendai, the cherry blossom tunnel along the Shiroishi River stretches for eight kilometers like a dream. The pink sea of flowers intertwines with the snow-capped peaks of the distant Zao Mountain Range, painting a magnificent spring scene. Walking along the riverside path, cherry blossom branches stretch and intertwine, petals fluttering down like a gentle whisper of spring. Visitors wander among the cherry trees, capturing this season's exclusive romance, while the river reflects the full bloom, its reflection gently rippling with the waves, adding a touch of poetry. In the afternoon, sitting quietly on a riverside bench, the breeze carries the scent of cherry blossoms, and time seems to flow slowly in this spring light. As the sun sets, the last rays of light fall on the cherry trees and the river, casting a warm golden glow. I stood for a long time, deeply cherishing the magnificent beauty of this thousand cherry trees, looking forward to meeting the cherry blossoms of Shiroishi River again next spring.
🌸A thousand cherry blossoms at a glance on the Shiraishi River embankment, this trip is really worth it!
#仙台樱花 Family, sometimes it’s better to run fast than to make a decision quickly! It is the cherry blossom season recently, and many popular cherry blossom viewing spots are crowded. I am worried that I will only see crowds of people when I go there, and will hardly see any cherry blossoms. So I changed my plan and took a detour to the Shiroishi River embankment in Sendai to see the Thousand Cherry Blossoms.
After arriving, I was directly amazed. The scenery in front of me was so beautiful! Miles of cherry blossom trees are in full bloom along the Shiroishi River embankment. The pink and delicate cherry blossoms are in clusters, like gorgeous clouds in the sky. The breeze blew gently, and the petals fluttered down, as if it was a romantic cherry blossom rain.
Here, you don't have to squeeze in with the crowds. You can stroll leisurely under the cherry trees, appreciate the graceful posture of each flower, listen to the gentle sound of petals falling, and feel the unique gentle breath of spring. Whether you want to take photos or simply enjoy this wonderful time, it is perfect.
My dears, if you also want to avoid the crowds and enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms, Sendai's Shiroishi River Bank Ichimoku Thousand Cherry Blossoms is definitely a great choice! Before the flowering season is over, hurry up and arrange your trip to enjoy the spring cherry blossoms!

[Shibata Town] Noodle Shop Yatsuboshi
I visited the restaurant around 11:15 on a Sunday in November.
There was no one waiting, but since there were only two of us and only two counter seats were available, we waited outside for about 5 minutes before being ushered inside.
My partner ordered a large serving of "pork soy sauce ramen" (free) for 900 yen, and I ordered a regular serving of "pork ramen" for 900 yen.
The pork soy sauce ramen had a clear soup and thin, straight noodles, which were delicious.
The pork ramen had thick noodles and soup like the Jiro style, but I felt that the soup was a little thin. The pork ramen had a lot of back fat, so next time I order it, I might order less back fat.
If anything, I would recommend the pork soy sauce ramen to people in their mid-40s.
