Mount Meru

Mount Meru is a prominent stratovolcano located in Tanzania, within Arusha National Park, just 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, with an elevation of 4,562.13 meters (14,968 feet). It is known for its unique geology, stunning views, and challenging yet rewarding hiking routes. Mount Meru is a dormant volcano that erupted most recently around 100 years ago. Its horseshoe-shaped crater was formed by a massive volcanic explosion that caused the eastern flank to collapse. The hike to the summit is a popular trekking activity, often considered a warm-up for Kilimanjaro climbers. The most common route is the Momella Route, a four-day trek. The summit, Socialist Peak, offers breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, wildlife, and the surrounding plains. The mountain's slopes are home to diverse ecosystems ranging from savannah at the base to dense montane forests and alpine vegetation at higher elevations. Wildlife, including giraffes, elephants, and buffalo, can often be seen along the trails. Mount Meru holds spiritual significance for the local Meru and Maasai communities, who regard it as sacred. The trek includes stops at Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and Little Meru, a secondary peak that provides acclimatization and stunning panoramic views.
