During the Thonburi period, King Taksin built a palace near Wat Bang Wa Yai and ordered it to be a royal temple and the residence of the Supreme Patriarch. During the Rattanakosin period, during the reign of King Rama I, Wat Bang Wa Yai was under the patronage of the royal family of the Wang Lang Palace, namely Her Royal Highness Princess Thepsudawadi (Sa), the elder sister of King Rama I and the mother of the Prince of the Palace of the Front. She had a palace next to the temple. She restored the temple together with King Rama I and dug up a bell, which she ordered to be placed at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram. She made five bells to compensate for Wat Bang Wa Yai. After that, she gave the temple a new name, “Wat Rakhang Khositaram.” - The principal Buddha image smiles at the sky. This is a bronze Buddha image in the meditation posture, approximately 4 cubits wide across the lap. In front of his face are the images of 3 disciples, sitting with their hands together as if receiving a sermon from the Buddha. This principal Buddha image is praised for its beauty. It is said that once, when King Chulalongkorn came to offer the Kathina robe at Wat Rakhang, he remarked to those in his audience that no matter which temple he went to, it was not like Wat Rakhang. As soon as he entered the chapel, the principal Buddha image smiled at the sky every time. For this reason, he presented the Noppharat Rajavaraphon and the Knight Grand Cordon of the White Elephant to this principal Buddha image in particular. And this principal Buddha image has been named Phra Principal Yim Rap Fa since then.
