The Qianqiu Pavilion in the Imperial Garden of the Forbidden City

Symmetrical to the Wanchun Pavilion in the Imperial Garden, the Qianqiu Pavilion was first built in 1536 (the 15th year of the Jiajing reign in the Ming dynasty). Formed by adding verandas to each side of a square pavilion, it has a cross-shaped floor plan. Each veranda features white marble steps and is surrounded by white marble railings. The green glazed tile parapet walls are decorated with a yellow tortoise-shell pattern. The lattice windows and partition doors feature a tripartite, six-lobed diamond design. The beams and brackets are adorned with dragon-and-brocade paintings. The Qianqiu Pavilion's double-eaved, hipped roof is unique. The lower eaves are supported by single-arm, three-tiered brackets, while the upper eaves are circular and supported by single-arm, five-tiered brackets. The roof is covered with yellow glazed bamboo-joint tiles, resembling an umbrella, symbolizing the ancient Mingtang system of "round sky, square earth." The ceiling inside the pavilion is painted with a double phoenix design, and the caisson features a gilded carved coiled dragon holding a pearl in its mouth, adding to its splendor. The Qianqiu Pavilion is renowned not only for its unique architectural style and exquisite decoration but also for its rich historical and cultural value. It is one of the most outstanding pavilions in the Forbidden City, boasting vibrant colors and exquisite craftsmanship. Similar in style to the Wanchun Pavilion in the Imperial Garden, the Qianqiu Pavilion is a multi-angled pavilion with verandas extending in four directions, forming a cross shape. Although some of the painted decorations have faded, it retains its magnificence. This small pavilion incorporates many ancient architectural forms and construction methods, making it well worth a visit!
