The Summer Palace in Early Spring

In early spring, the Summer Palace begins to recover from the icy grip of winter! Built by Emperor Qianlong in 1750 for his mother, the Summer Palace cost 4.48 million taels of silver. Based on the framework of Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, and modeled after Hangzhou's West Lake, it showcases the style of a southern Chinese imperial garden. The Summer Palace suffered damage twice, first by the Anglo-French Allied Forces in 1860 and then by the Eight-Nation Alliance in 1900.
