Ancient Salt Ponds of Jao Sang Kham

Bo Kluea District is located about 80 kilometers from Nan city. It is a small district renowned for its unique mountain salt production, known as the 'only mountain salt pond in the world,' which is over 800 years old. These salt ponds have existed since ancient times and were distributed to Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Kengtung, Luang Prabang, and even Xishuangbanna in southern China. In the past, there were many salt ponds, but now only two remain, located in Ban Bo Luang. This area comprises eight villages, with Ban Bo Luang having two public salt ponds called Bo Nuea and Bo Tai. Bo Nuea is situated by the Mang River, while Bo Tai is about 500 meters away at the foot of the mountain at the end of the village. With its beautiful landscape surrounded by lush green mountains, Bo Kluea is a tourist attraction in Nan province, inviting travelers to experience the natural atmosphere and the legend of high-altitude salt production. Salt production halts during the Buddhist Lent and resumes afterward.
