El Ateneo. A bookstore unlike any other!

In Argentina’s Barrio Norte district is a delightful building called El Ateneo Grand Splendid. Now a bookstore, this building was formerly a theatre. Having opened in 1919, in its heyday, this theatre could hold just over 1,000 people. With beautiful ceiling frescoes painted by the renowned Italian artist Nazareno Orlandi, and a cafe located on what would have been the stage, this bookstore still has the feel of what life would have been like in this former theatre.
