Shangdang Gate

In the ninth year of the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty, after six years in office, Luzhou's prefect Ma Tun oversaw a major renovation of the bell and drum tower, originally built during the Kaihuang period of the Sui Dynasty. The renovated Shangdang Gate and bell and drum tower were described as "simple yet solid, majestic and strong." Shangdang Gate is located on a high mound at the north end of Fupo Street. Ascend the steps, pass through the gate, and you'll find yourself in a commanding position, standing tall and independent. I arrived quite late, so I just walked around inside and out, checking it off my list. The gatehouse of Shangdang Gate features a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof structure. There's a building on each side of the main gate: a bell tower on the left and a drum tower on the right.
