Supplementary Notes on Luoyi Village

Luoyi Village, a natural village under the jurisdiction of Bailian District, Laocheng Town, Chengmai County, Hainan Province, is a traditional Chinese village. It was called 'Tangyi' in ancient times and later renamed 'Luoyi'. The village covers an area of 10 square kilometers. Luoyi Village was established in the fourth year of Baoyou in the Southern Song Dynasty (1256), and was a post station on the west line of Hainan Island in ancient times, a historical and cultural village in Hainan Province, and a longevity town in Chengmai County. Luoyi Village retains the archway of the Ming Dynasty, the ancestral hall of the Qing Dynasty, the volcanic stone houses built around the sun, moon, and star ponds, the ancient roads, and old wells. The layout of the streets and alleys in Luoyi Village is typical, with concentrated distribution of architectural heritage and historical and cultural relics, of considerable scale and good appearance, and rich historical and cultural resources in the surrounding area. In the fourth year of Baoyou in the Southern Song Dynasty (1256), the villagers of the Wu and Chen families gathered to form a village, named 'Tangyi Village'. During the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1398), due to the 'surrounding peaks, the post station is here', the knowledgeable people in the village changed the village name to 'Luoyi'. The 'Li Clan Genealogy' records: 'Luo is the surrounding peaks; Yi is the horse public opened Qiong post station, hence the village name'. In the Qing Dynasty, Luoyi Village was once called 'Luoyi', and soon after it was restored to the name 'Luoyi'.
