Upakut Temple, Chiang Mai Province

Wat Upakut, Chiang Mai It is named after Phra Upakut or Phra Buakhem, a monk during the reign of King Ashoka the Great. There is a legend that a poor couple built a house outside of Chiang Mai. They crossed the Ping River to the west bank and entered Tha Pae Road. At that time, it was still early morning and it was the 15th day of the waxing moon on the night of the full moon. They met a young novice monk. They divided the items they intended to sell, raised them up, prayed, and put them in the novice's alms bowl. After receiving the novice's blessing, the couple gradually prospered. Later, an old monk learned that the reason they were prosperous in business was because of the merit of giving alms to the novice monk, which was Phra Upakut Mahathera who entered Nirodha Samadhi under the navel of the sea. On the 15th day of the waxing moon, he transformed into a young novice and went out to collect alms early in the morning to help others. Later, the couple built a temple at the place where they found the young novice monk.
