Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan is an ancient temple in Chiang Mai Province. It was built during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, the seventh king of the Mangrai Dynasty. The exact year of construction is unknown. It is believed that the temple was built between 1928 and 1945. Wat Chedi Luang is an ancient royal temple that has been renovated in many eras. In particular, the chedi, which is currently 60 meters wide, is one of the most important chedis in Chiang Mai. Wat Chedi Luang was built in the heart of Chiang Mai, which was originally considered the center of the administration of the Lanna Kingdom. Currently, there are many things to worship at Wat Chedi Luang in the heart of Chiang Mai City, including Chedi Luang, Inthakhil, a rubber tree, a kuman, and a hermit, which reflect the development of the concept of the universe that has changed according to the surrounding circumstances of the city. Wat Chedi Luang was once home to the Emerald Buddha, the sacred Buddha of Thailand. Wat Chedi Luang was damaged by an earthquake in 2088. The height of the chedi was reduced to half of its original height, but it still maintains its beautiful and impressive appearance. In 1992, the Fine Arts Department completed the renovation of the chedi. Therefore, the Naga Prok (water-spraying Naga) stairs were brought back to be placed at the entrance and a beautiful elephant statue was sculpted at the base of the pagoda.
