After the Opium War in 1840, this place became the focus of coveted by the great powers. In the 1880s, Li Hongzhang built the Beiyang Navy Base here, making it a military stronghold, but it also attracted war. During the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, the Japanese army committed a brutal massacre here; after the defeat, Lushun was first forcibly leased to Tsarist Russia, and then became a battlefield during the Russo-Japanese War.
