Dalu Island and the First Sino-Japanese War

Dalu Island Dandong Dalu Island is the largest island along the northern coastline, approximately 10 nautical miles from the coast of Gushan Town. The tides have a significant impact here, and ferries can generally only travel back and forth in the morning. Therefore, traveling to Dalu Island requires an overnight stay on the island. Dalu Island is now a place for marine fishing and seawater aquaculture, with three villages and hundreds of fishing households still living here. On September 17, 1894, the Battle of the Yellow Sea of the First Sino-Japanese War broke out in the waters not far from Dalu Island. Four Chinese warships, "Zhiyuan," "Jingyuan," "Chaoyong," and "Yangwei," were sunk. A few days later, more than a hundred bodies of Chinese soldiers floated to the beaches around Dalu Island. The villagers brought these bodies to Dalu Island for burial and built the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers of the First Sino-Japanese War for them. There is also a "Deng Shichang Tomb" on Dalu Island, but Deng Shichang sank with his warship during the battle, so this tomb is likely just a cenotaph or may contain nothing at all, serving as a place for people to remember the martyrs. Dalu Island is now also a very popular tourist destination, fulfilling people's various imaginations of an island. Dalu Island can be described as a tranquil paradise.
