Former Tainan Prefecture Chief's Residence - A Historical Site in Tainan City's East District

The Former Tainan Prefecture Chief's Residence is located in Tainan City's East District, near Tainan First Senior High School. During the Japanese colonial period, it served as the official residence for the Tainan Prefecture Chief and later became the accommodation for officials of the Ministry of the Interior. Constructed between 1898 and 1906, the residence originally consisted of two buildings: the southern building, a Japanese-style structure known as the 'Wa-kan,' and the northern building, a Western-style structure called the 'Yo-kan.' The architectural style reflects the 'Wa-Yo Two Pavilion' design popular during the Meiji era. Due to years of neglect, the Wa-kan now only retains its foundation and decorative floor tiles, while the Yo-kan underwent renovations to achieve its current appearance. Inside the Yo-kan, the arrangement of tables and chairs exudes a classical artistic vibe, simple yet elegant. Although the residence itself is not large, its rear area features two small artistic streets lined with several unique shops showcasing creative works by local artists. After touring the residence, visitors can stroll through these streets to explore and select their favorite art pieces.
