Shiwei: A Dreamy Border Town on the Borderline

At the crown of the rooster-shaped map of China lies a dreamy little town—Shiwei. Nestled in the northwest of Hulunbuir's Eerguna City, it rests by the Eerguna River, separated from the Russian town of Olochi by just a river. As China's only Russian ethnic township, Shiwei exudes a unique and captivating charm. The moment I stepped into Shiwei, it felt as though I had traveled to a foreign land. What greeted me was a scene filled with Russian-style wooden log houses. These houses are constructed using whole logs joined together without a single nail, yet they are incredibly sturdy. The gaps between the logs are filled with moss or soil, providing insulation while adding a touch of rustic charm. I stayed in one of these wooden log houses. As I opened the door, a faint pine scent greeted me, instantly sweeping away the fatigue of travel. The interior decor was simple yet cozy, with Russian-style oil paintings adorning the walls and brightly colored bed linens on the beds. Every detail radiated a rich exotic ambiance. Here, I felt like a character in a fairy tale, about to embark on a magical journey. At dawn, as the first rays of sunlight bathed the town, I eagerly headed to the Eerguna River. The town was still shrouded in a thin layer of morning mist, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. Walking along the Unity Trail, passing through the town's scattered houses and squares, I arrived at the riverside observation deck. The deck was already filled with tourists, all quietly waiting for the sunrise. Gazing out, the Eerguna River resembled a silver ribbon winding through the vast grasslands. Across the river, the Russian town of Olochi appeared faintly in the mist, its silhouette barely discernible. In Shiwei, besides enjoying the stunning scenery and unique architecture, savoring the local cuisine is also a delightful experience. The food here blends the flavors of both Chinese and Russian cultures, offering a distinctive taste. Borodinsky bread, a traditional Russian loaf, has a crispy crust and soft interior, emitting a rich wheat aroma. Paired with wild blueberry jam, its sweet and tangy flavor is unforgettable. At night, Shiwei transforms into a vibrant town illuminated by dazzling lights, brimming with joy and festivity. Shiwei, this dreamy border town, captivates with its unique natural landscapes, rich exotic ambiance, and profound historical and cultural heritage. Here, I experienced the fusion and collision of Chinese and Russian cultures, marveled at the wonders of nature, and admired the ingenuity of human craftsmanship. As I left Shiwei, my heart was filled with reluctance, but I knew this beautiful journey would forever remain in my memory, becoming a cherished treasure in my life.
