Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà canton, straddling the river plains in the interior of Girona province.

Known as the hometown of Salvador Dalí, this town with strong Catalan roots offers visitors the chance to visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum, which is dedicated to the genius of surrealist painting. It is a cultural area with various museums and a calendar full of festivals and events divided throughout the year. Figueres also has an important heritage of monuments, the most notable of which are the old medieval walls and the Castle of Sant Ferran, as well as fine examples of modernist and neoclassical architecture dotted around the city centre. In addition to the many attractions of Figueres, its strategic location also allows you to discover the great tourist potential that this beautiful region of the Costa Brava has to offer. Situated between the eastern end of the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava, Figueres is a town full of tourist attractions. On the outskirts, Castelo de Sant Ferran is an 18th-century fortress that overlooks the town from a hilltop. Its enormous size and circumference of more than three kilometers make it one of the largest in Europe. The historic center of Figueres is bounded by the remains of the old walls built during the Middle Ages to defend the town. Beautiful corners from the medieval period have been preserved, such as the Plaza de Ayuntamiento, which was remodelled in neoclassical style and houses the Parliament building, or the area around Carrer Magre, where the old Jewish quarter is located. La Rambla is the main place for walking and the real heart of the city. This bustling commercial street was the site of some of the most ambitious building projects of the 19th and 20th centuries, much of which was driven by the region's rising middle class. It is worth mentioning the large number of modernist buildings here, such as Casa Cusí, Casa Puig-Soler and Casa Salleras; the neoclassical Casa Bonaterra, Casa del Cafè Progrés and Casa Polideseia are also worth mentioning. In terms of religious architecture, the Church of Sant Pere deserves special attention. The parish church was originally of Romanesque style and was rebuilt in the 14th century according to Gothic rules. Other elements were added later, such as the transept and apse, both date from the 18th century.
