Artificial island in the middle of the lake - Hapu Island

Hapu Island is an artificial island in Lake Geneva, located in Lohr, canton Vaud, Switzerland. Harpe Island was founded in 1838. An obelisk was erected there in memory of Frédéric César de la Harpe. At night, many of the trees are cleverly lit up, giving it a mysterious and unique appearance. Around 1835, a group of local merchants decided to build an island to protect the port in the west, from where timber from the Jura region was shipped to Geneva. In 1838, Frédéric César de La Harpe died and the island was named after him. After public subscriptions a committee erected a monument to our distinguished countryman. It is an obelisk designed by Veyrassat, an architect from Lausanne, and features a medallion engraved by Pradier.
