Kyoto's Geisha District

Gion is located around Shijo Avenue between Yasaka Shrine in the east and the Kamo River in the west. It is filled with shops, restaurants and ochaya (teahouses), where geiko (Kyoto dialect for geisha) and maiko (geiko apprentices) entertain. The style of buildings, restaurants, and store fronts transport you back in time. Seeing so many people dressed in kimono is gorgeous and fun. There’s always something to do and somewhere to go. There’s tons of shopping to do, great restaurants to try, and a lot of temples, shrines, and historic things to go see. It’s very easy to get lost in the winding streets and hilly roads. It can get EXTREMELY busy so if you’re looking for historic sights, go early. If not, expect large amounts of crowds. In 2024, I want to try wearing kimono again. #2024wish
