French stone town Gordes

Gordes is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It was occupied by the Roman Empire in its early days. Although there is a lack of documentary evidence, there are traces of the Romans everywhere in the area, especially on the Roman road that passes through Apt and Carpentras and through the valley. Traces of Lhamo architecture, such as skulls, amphorae, and columns, were also found in nearby villages. In the 8th century, a Benedictine monastery called Saint-Chaffrey was founded by monks from the Abbey of Saint-Cavour in Monasières-en-Vélay on the site of the Temple of Loma that had been destroyed during the Arab invasions. In 1031, Gordes built a castle, which was refortified in 1123 and became the "Castle of the Nobles", the only known one of the many nearby castles. The Abbey of Sénanque was founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks from the Abbey of Mazan in the Ardèche, under the patronage of Alfont, Bishop of Cavaillon, and Ramon Berenguer II, Count of Barcelona, ​​Count of Provence. Senanque Abbey has now become a must-visit destination for Chinese tourists when they come to see lavender in the summer. After the death of King René of Provence, the territory of Provence was incorporated into the Kingdom of France in 1481 and became a French royal province. During World War II, Gordes was an active resistance village and was later awarded a decoration, the Croix de Guerre 1939-1945. After a period of reconstruction after World War II, Gordes began to attract artists including Marc Chagall and Jean-Delors, who discovered the site in 1947 and attracted their artist friends to Gordes, including Sergei Polyakov, Victor Vasari and Jean-Devasne. Among them, artist Marc Chagall and painter Sergei Polyakov were both born in Russia.
