Seongbukdong Forest Bathing Area

#aprilblooms Seongbukdong Forest Bathing Area is located a little outside of Daejeon, about a 10-minute drive past Bangdong Reservoir, nestled at the foot of Gyeryong Mountain. There's a spacious parking lot at the entrance, making it convenient to visit by car. At the entrance, I noticed a forest library operated by the forest bathing area. However, a notice indicated that the contract employee for this year had their contract expired, and it wouldn't be operating until a new employee is hired next year. Why the hiring is being delayed until next year is unclear. The forest bathing area itself isn't very large. My initial plan for the day included hiking up to Baegunbong Peak in Gyeryong Mountain. The uphill trail began here. Shortly after starting, I encountered a fork in the path. Naturally, I took the direction towards Baegunbong. There was hardly anyone around, and it didn't seem like a frequently traveled hiking trail. The slope was quite steep, but I was able to ascend without too much difficulty. The vibrant green leaves of the forest were beautiful and made me feel good as I climbed. However, soon enough, swarms of gnats started to bother me. They persistently followed me, and despite waving a towel and trying to brush them off, it was a constant struggle. Ultimately, the gnats became too overwhelming, and since it was an unfamiliar path, I decided to turn back after reaching the ridge where the path to Baegunbong branched off. The descent was also plagued by the annoying gnats. Back down near the parking lot at the entrance of the forest bathing area, I decided to walk along the forest road (임도) instead. I regretted not having chosen this option from the beginning. The forest path was pleasant, and there were shaded resting spots where I could take a break. Best of all, there were no gnats! During my walk along the forest road, I even took off my mask and fully enjoyed the forest scent and fresh air before heading back. Furthermore, near the Seongbukdong Forest Bathing Area, I discovered the National Daejeon Forest Welfare Center (국립대전숲체원), operated by the Korea Forest Welfare Institute. It was my first time there, and I was surprised to find well-maintained parks, rest areas, experience facilities, accommodations, and hiking trails. I simply looked around today without any prior information, but I hope to experience the various facilities there on another visit. Overall Thoughts Seongbukdong Forest Bathing Area offers good accessibility with its parking facilities. However, my experience was somewhat marred by the unexpected nuisance of gnats on the hiking trail. On the other hand, the forest road provided a peaceful and enjoyable walk without the insects. The discovery of the nearby National Daejeon Forest Welfare Center with its diverse offerings was a pleasant surprise and makes me consider a return visit to explore it further.
