Itsukushima Shrine is located on Miyajima in Hatsukaichi City near Hiroshima. It is backed by Mount Misan and faces the sea. It has a history of 1,400 years and was called Itukishima Shrine in ancient times. Itsukushima Shrine is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan and one of the three major shrines in Japan (Ise Jingu Shrine and Izumo Taisha Shrine). Itsukushima Shrine is said to have been founded in 593 AD by Saeki Kuraji. In 1168 AD in the late Heian period (Jinan 3rd year), with the support of Taira Kiyomori, Itsukushima Shrine was expanded, thus forming the current structure.
