Takkoku Bishamon-do, a cavernous temple with 1200 years of history

The entire grounds are designated as a historic site. We found this on the way to Chusonji Temple from Genbikei by car and decided to stop by! Bishamon-do Hall is built to be set into the rock. Climbing it offers a panoramic view. I thought back to history, thinking that this view must have been seen 1,200 years ago. This is a cave where Sakanoue no Tamuramaro enshrined Bishamonten as a memorial to his expedition to the Barbarians. The cliff-hanging Bishamon-do Hall has been rebuilt after each fire. The Heian period statue of Joroku Acala (prefecturally designated cultural property) and the "Great Rock Face Buddha" (carved cliff Buddha), said to be the northernmost Buddha.
