[Aomori/Hirosaki] Neputa Festival, a seasonal summer event

The Neputa Festival is a traditional festival held every summer in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. Along with the Nebuta Festival in Aomori City, it is one of the most representative summer festivals in the Tohoku region. The two festivals are similar, but there are some differences. Neputa is characterized by fan-shaped lanterns painted with warrior pictures, which represent quiet bravery. On the other hand, Nebuta has many three-dimensional, powerful doll-shaped lanterns, and is characterized by a more dynamic design. There are also differences in the atmosphere between the two, with Neputa being "brave and solemn" and Nebuta being "active and dynamic." The Neputa Festival is held in Hirosaki City for one week from August 1st to 7th every year. During the festival, fan-shaped Neputa lanterns several meters tall are paraded through the city to the sound of drums and flutes.
