Hitachi Seaside Park – Japan’s Most Colourful Natural Wonder

If you ever find yourself in Japan during spring or autumn, make sure Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki is on your list. I had the chance to visit recently, and I still can’t get over the sheer beauty of this place! In spring, the hills are covered in over 4.5 million baby blue nemophila flowers that stretch as far as the eye can see. The way they blend with the sky makes it feel like you’re walking through a living painting. I was there just before peak bloom in late April, and it was already breathtaking. Come October, the same hillside turns into a sea of fiery red kochia bushes — each one a perfect puff of colour. I’ve seen photos of the transformation, and it’s now top of my list to return in autumn. But flowers aren’t all this park offers. There are cycling paths, forests, a small amusement park with a Ferris wheel, and even a beachside area. The food stalls near the entrance are worth stopping for — I tried nemophila-inspired soft serve (yes, it’s blue!) and it was surprisingly good. Best times to visit? April–May for nemophila October for kochia But honestly, the park is stunning year-round with tulips, cosmos, sunflowers, and more. How to get there: From Tokyo, take the JR Tokiwa or Hitachi limited express to Katsuta Station, then hop on a bus to the park’s entrance (about 2 hours total). Easy day trip!
