Hidden Izakaya in Lai Chi Kok

Located between Lai Chi Kok and Mei Foo, Kin Sake House offers a special deal: simply capture a screenshot and book via Instagram to receive a complimentary sea urchin or foie gras mille-feuille crisp per table. Limited availability. Weekday dinner reservations are even harder to secure than weekends. We opted for the pricier sea urchin mille-feuille crisp as the complimentary item, but unfortunately, the sea urchin lacked freshness and sweetness, and the minced toro inside was similarly underwhelming. On the other hand, we ordered the caramelized foie gras mille-feuille crisp ($178 for two pieces), which was much tastier. The caramelized foie gras was rich and flavorful, paired with a tangy balsamic glaze. The crisp texture came from two layers of tempura seaweed, though the rice and wagyu didn’t leave much of an impression. The green tea plum wine ($398 per bottle) was less sweet than typical plum wine, with a subtle tea aroma that felt elegant. The restaurant also serves a complimentary platter of 12 types of pickled vegetables, including cherry tomatoes, okra, radish, bitter melon, lotus root, burdock, cucumber, garlic, and more. Each item was delicious, and this beautifully presented appetizer alone earned high marks. The smoked golden tuna ($198) was fresh and tender. The grilled tiger prawns with shrimp paste ($158) were intensely flavorful. Other skewers were also quite good.
