Hong Kong's Only Coastal Reserve: The Mirror of the Sky

Cape D'Aguilar, located at the southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island, is Hong Kong's only coastal reserve. It boasts stunning sea caves, an ancient lighthouse, and rich marine biodiversity. The hiking trail here is beginner-friendly, spanning approximately 5 kilometers and taking about 2-3 hours to complete, offering views of various natural landscapes along the way. Suggested Itinerary 1. Starting from Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus • Take bus number 9 to Cape D'Aguilar Road. Note that holiday and weekday schedules differ, so confirm with the driver whether the bus passes through Cape D'Aguilar before boarding. • After alighting, walk along Cape D'Aguilar Road for about 40 minutes, enjoying views of Hong Kong Island's coastline along the way. 2. Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse • One of Hong Kong's oldest lighthouses, built in 1875 and designated as a statutory monument. • Constructed from granite, the pure white tower exudes a Greek aesthetic, making it a popular photo spot. 3. Thunder Cave • A sea cave formed by water erosion. When waves crash against its walls, a thunderous sound is produced, hence the name. • Visitors can take photos outside the cave or carefully enter to admire the spectacular waves inside. 4. Whale Bone Specimen • Displayed outside the Swire Institute of Marine Science at the University of Hong Kong, this specimen is said to be from a baleen whale stranded in Victoria Harbor in 1955. • The specimen has become an iconic feature of Cape D'Aguilar, attracting many visitors. 5. Crab Cave (Mirror of the Sky) • A natural sea cave with an entrance resembling a crab. The shallow water on the ground creates reflections, earning it the nickname "Mirror of the Sky." • This is an excellent spot for photography, but be cautious of slippery rocks. 6. Cape D'Aguilar Coastal Reserve • Designated as a reserve in 1996, swimming, camping, and collecting organisms are prohibited. • The area features pristine coastal landscapes and offers opportunities to observe intertidal creatures like sea urchins and starfish. Important Notes • Transportation: Bus number 9 only enters Cape D'Aguilar on Sundays and public holidays, and not all buses stop there.
