Connecting the past, present and future with exhibits to inspire the public’s imagination of creative communities

Taking the theme of "past meets future, East meets West", the exhibition of achievements in urban planning and architectural design, "Crossing Boundaries - Memories, Realization and Change", provides a unique perspective and showcases the professional knowledge and contributions of Hong Kong architects. The three exhibition areas of "Memories, Realization and Change" lead visitors into the perspective of urban architects, experience professional knowledge in different fields, and gain inspiration on how to create an ideal city with sustainable development. By looking back to Hong Kong’s past, the exhibition explores how to use the aesthetics and power of modern design. While showcasing the beauty of the city’s historic landmarks, the “Memories” exhibition area also pays tribute to many famous architects. The exhibit “Dialogue Across Generations” by SKY YUTAKA reflects the common culture of co-creation in the architectural world, showing that design and interactive communication are closely related to the sustainable development of Hong Kong’s creative community culture in any era. Another exhibition area, “Realization”, showcases the rich and vivid community colors of various districts in Hong Kong, as well as the low-key hidden human stories. It also shows how a group of industry insiders break through the inherent professional positions, work together across fields to create, and burst out new vitality. The exhibit "Millions of Houses" was created by the Hong Kong Housing Authority. It pieces together the existing public housing estates into a timeline based on the sequence of their completion and the number of units. It represents that the design of public rental housing estates is both orderly and standard-compliant, while also being developed in accordance with local conditions and full of local unique characteristics. The blank space at the end of the timeline symbolizes the connection between the past and the future, exploring the development history of Hong Kong's public housing estates while looking forward to the future. Picture Rhythm Studios’ installation “Dream Art” consists of steel mesh that advances over time, showing how Hong Kong people with dreams draw inspiration from the endless coastline. The animation in the installation faithfully presents the emergence and removal of old and new signs on Hong Kong’s streets, reflecting the evolution of Hong Kong’s urban street advertising. Gugu Architecture and Fu Design have jointly created "Sicheng Si" to express that we should look at cities at different scales. The identical city buildings appear lifeless on the surface, but people's footprints and daily activities give life to the buildings. Combined with the symbol of adaptable green plants, it reflects the resilience of Hong Kong people and fully expresses the Hong Kong spirit. Finally, the “Progress” exhibition area gathers all voices, breaks through the boundaries of architecture, blends technology and creativity, focuses on imagining the modernization process of the city’s future, and thinks about how to forge the city’s resilience and carve out a new direction for human civilization from a seemingly obstructed future. KuoDao Architects and Dimension Plus have collaborated to create Mirror in Mirror, a work that combines installation display and artistic presentation. The former expresses that in an era of rapid development, the technology of transmitting information has gradually changed our lifestyle and social structure, with far-reaching impacts; the latter shows that media connects people and things, and connects virtual and reality. The Hong Kong urban landscape has been datafied and reshaped into multiple landscape dimensions, allowing the audience to reset and immerse themselves in it, and enjoy constantly shuttling through the ever-changing scenes of Hong Kong. The exhibition also has a "cross-media" theme. The curator specially invited three architects with multiple identities and a composer: Professor Zhong Hongliang (architect/university professor/literature lover), Chen Zhiheng (calligrapher), Lai Zhili (architect/aerial photographer) and composer Lin Feng to express architectural art in the form of literature, calligraphy, aerial photography and music. The exhibition also features a large-scale projection installation inspired by the coastlines on both sides of Victoria Harbour, inviting visitors to travel between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula and let their thoughts wander there. The Hong Kong exhibition will be on display from now until January 4, 2023, at the Mrs. MacArthur Gallery at Asia Society Hong Kong Center and Nan Fung Place - The Annex in Central. Admission is free to the public. During the exhibition, the curatorial team has also specially arranged a series of free activities for the public to participate in, named "12 Crossings" and centered around the theme of the exhibition, including dialogue sessions, architect guided tours and exhibitor sharing sessions.
