We started at 1:00 AM with only headlamps lighting the rocky path. After an hour of steady uphill hiking, we reached the rim… and then descended into the crater to witness the famous blue fire, a natural phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gas. The eerie glow flickered like ghostly flames against the pitch-black walls. It felt like walking through another dimension. As sunrise approached, the blue fire faded — but Ijen wasn’t done. The crater revealed a toxic turquoise lake, one of the most acidic in the world, surrounded by mist and the distant clink of sulfur miners hard at work. Ijen is harsh, beautiful, and humbling.
