World Heritage 'Shrines and Temples of Nikko'｜Toshogu Shrine｜Nikko

The 'Shrines and Temples of Nikko,' centered around Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple, and Nikko Futarasan Shrine, were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999, comprising a total of 103 buildings. The overall architecture and color style are quite magnificent, making it a must-visit attraction in Nikko. 📍Nikko Toshogu Shrine Tōshōgu Shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate, as a deity. The representative building is the Yomeimon Gate, adorned with 508 carvings, vibrant and luxurious. 📍Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple Rin-no-ji The main hall, Sanbutsudo, was established during the Heian period and is the largest wooden structure in eastern Japan. Rinnoji also has a treasure hall and a garden (Shoyoen), which require a separate ticket (500 yen) or a package ticket (1000 yen, including the main hall ticket). The treasure hall doesn't have much content, but the garden is beautiful, with night illumination from October 25 to November 15. 📍Nikko Futarasan Shrine Futarasan Enshrines the deities of Mount Nantai, Mount Nyohou, and Mount Tarou. It is also a popular shrine for matchmaking and good fortune. 📍Nikkozan Rinnoji Taiyu-in Temple Hall The mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, features a solemn and stable architectural style.
