Yellow River Wonder: Hukou Waterfall

Hukou Waterfall is China's second-largest waterfall and the world's largest yellow-water waterfall. Located in the Yellow River bed of the Jin-Shaan Gorge, it borders Sangbai in Yichuan County, Shaanxi to the west and Qilangwo in Ji County, Shanxi to the east. Upstream of Hukou, the Yellow River spans over 300m wide, but suddenly narrows to just 50m at the waterfall. The water converges into a powerful torrent, plunging 30m into a deep trough with thunderous waves audible from 5km away. The spectacular spray creates towering water columns, forming a uniquely breathtaking landscape. Its shape resembles water pouring from a teapot—narrow at the base and wide at the top—earning its name "Hukou" (Teapot Spout). It's a national 5A-level scenic area. Two legendary sights—"Land Sailing" and "Underwater Mist"—once defined Hukou. While Land Sailing has vanished due to improved transport, the Underwater Mist appears during high-water periods: the "Peach Blossom Flood" (April-May), summer (August), and autumn (September-November). Lucky visitors may even spot a rainbow. Hukou symbolizes the indomitable spirit of the Yellow River and the Chinese nation. This photo collection captures the view from Shanxi's side.
