How to Spend a Day in Xitang

Woke up to the sound of water brushing against the stone walls beneath my guesthouse window—mornings in Xitang are quiet and almost dreamlike. After weeks of traveling through China, I was craving something familiar, so I grabbed buttery croissants and a coffee from Starbucks (yes, there’s one by the canal!) before setting out for the day. Woke up in a cozy canal-side guesthouse and craved something familiar after days of street food—so I grabbed a croissant and iced latte from Starbucks right by the water (surprisingly charming spot to people-watch!). Morning: • Start early to catch the town before the crowds. • Walk along the Shipi Lane—a narrow stone-paved alley barely wide enough for two people. It’s atmospheric and full of history. • Cross a few of the 27 ancient stone bridges, especially Wufu Bridge for a great canal view. • Stop at Yanyu Corridor (covered waterside walkway)—perfect for photos and soaking in the old-world charm. Midday: • Visit the Button Museum for something quirky. • Have lunch at a canal-side restaurant. Afternoon: • Explore West Street for traditional shops selling incense, silk fans, and handmade jewelry. • Drop by Lu’s House (a preserved Ming-era residence) to get a feel for ancient local life. • Pause at a teahouse overlooking the canal, and enjoy a quiet cup of osmanthus tea. Evening: • Find a spot by the water for dinner—look for lantern-lit patios. • Walk the canal loop after dark to see the lanterns reflected in the water—a must-see moment. • If you’re staying overnight, grab a drink at one of the quiet canal bars tucked into the alleys. Itinerary scheduling: Explore Shipi Lane and walk across Wufu Bridge • Visit the Button Museum and Yanyu Corridor • Lunch at a canal-side restaurant (try river shrimp & lotus root) • Teahouse break with osmanthus tea • Browse shops on West Street • Dinner and plum wine by the water • Evening walk under the lantern lights along the canals Accommodation: Recommended Area: Near the main canal or West Street for easy access to attractions Hotel Name: Xitang Riverview Boutique Guesthouse (or similar) Hotel Address: Close to Wufu Bridge, within walking distance to everything Photo Spots: 1. Wufu Bridge at Sunrise – Soft lighting and peaceful reflections 2. Yanyu Corridor – Covered walkway perfect for candid or moody shots 3. Canal at Night with Lanterns – The ultimate Xitang photo moment Tips: • Arrive early or stay late to avoid day-trip crowds • Wear comfy shoes (stone paths can be slippery) • Bring cash—some shops don’t take cards • One day is enough to soak in the atmosphere, but an overnight stay makes it magical #xitang #historicallandmarks #localguides
