[Kanagawa Prefecture/Shirahata Shrine] A shrine connected to Minamoto no Yoritomo that is only open during the New Year period

It is enshrined on the left side just before the stairs leading to Minamoto no Yoritomo's grave! According to the history of the shrine, this place was originally Yoritomo's Buddhist altar, where he worshipped a small Kannon statue that he had placed in his topknot during the Battle of Ishibashiyama. When Yoritomo died, he was buried here and the shrine was renamed Hokkedo. After that, due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism and the destruction of Buddhism, the shrine was renamed Shirahata Shrine. It is a quiet shrine, but the shrine office is open only during New Year's, when it becomes more lively than usual. [Additional Information] "Topknot" is pronounced motodori (or tabusa). It is the place where hair is gathered and tied on top of the head.
