The "Death Railway" was built by Japan during World War II in order to occupy Burma and connect Thailand and Burma. The reason why this railway is called "Death" is that more than 100,000 prisoners of war were sacrificed in the construction of the railway. It would have taken six years to complete the construction of the railway, but under the oppression of the Japanese army, it was completed in only 17 months. The Bridge over the River Kwai is part of the Death Railway. During World War II, the bridge was actually blown up in order to cut off the supply route to fight against the Japanese army. However, the Thai government later bought back the railway and spent many years and manpower to rebuild the bridge, trying its best to preserve its original appearance at that time. Now the "Bridge over the River Kwai" has become an important tourist attraction in Kanchanaburi Province. Visitors can walk up the bridge and watch trains passing by at a very close distance.
