Pha Taem National Park

Pha Taem National Park covers the areas of Khong Chiam, Si Mueang Mai and Pho Sai districts in Ubon Ratchathani province. It consists of a rich forest, a variety of wildlife and many beautiful natural attractions such as Pha Chan, Soi Sawan Waterfall, Sao Chaliang, Tham Patihan and Phu Na Tham. In the past, local villagers who farmed near the Pha Taem forest area rarely traveled into the forest because they believed that Pha Taem was a forbidden area. These cliffs are sacred and believed to be the cliffs of death. Anyone who trespassed there would be ill or die. Pha Taem became famous when a group of lecturers and students from the Department of Anthropology, Silpakorn University, discovered prehistoric paintings that were about 3,000-4,000 years old. They surveyed and discovered prehistoric paintings at Pha Taem, so they proposed to the National Parks Division, Royal Forest Department, to establish the Pha Taem forest as a national park. Pha Taem National Park was declared the 74th national park in Thailand and is considered a national park. The first in Thailand with the Mekong River, which is the border between Thailand and Laos, as the boundary.
