Wawel thief tower 🇵🇱

#100waysoftravel Wawel thief tower is one of the significance tower inside the Wawel Royal Castle 🏰. It is called thief tower because of the prisoner catching and keeping cellars had been built on the basement of the tower. The tower located on the western part of the hill, the tower was erected in the 14th century, during the reign of King Casimir the Great. During this period, numerous works were carried out to strengthen the fortification system of the castle. In the mid-nineteenth century it was rebuilt by Austrians. The upper part of the tower was then topped with a flat roof and covered with battlements. In the years 1950-1951 it was restored to its eighteenth century state and connected by a porch with a reconstructed defensive wall.
