History and Background - Phra That Hariphunchai is one of the most important religious sites in the North and is the pride of the people of Lamphun. It is located in Wat Phra That Hariphunchai in the heart of Lamphun. Inside the temple is a wide courtyard with many chapels and a beautiful bell tower. According to legend, it was built during the reign of King Athitayarat, King of Hariphunchai, around 1586 B.E. Later, this chedi was renovated several times. During the reign of King Tilokarat in 1986 B.E., he ordered the chedi to be increased to 23 wa, with a base 12 wa and 2 sok wide, and a 7-tiered umbrella at the top. After that, Phra Muang Kaew renovated and built a gallery of 500 spears, which is a fence around the chedi. He then built the royal chapel. In 1786 B.E., King Kawila renovated the chedi. And he built a royal umbrella at 4 corners and built a golden umbrella on the top of the pagoda with 9 layers. The base of the pagoda is a square with a width of 10 wa on each side. He built a brass fence around the pagoda. The inside of the pagoda is a bright gold color, which is very attractive to tourists from other provinces who have the opportunity to visit.
