Kamikochi Korippei Campground (Woodhouse Area)
There are many cabins to choose from at Korindaira Camp and there is also a camping area (you can bring your own tent or rent a tent they have already set up). We stayed in Kamikochi for three days and two nights, staying in a cabin on the first night and camping on the second night. Actually, the cabin I booked online was for the second night (all others were fully booked). I even wrote a letter a week before departure to inquire if there were any cabins available for the first night, because we thought it would be smoother to stay in a cabin on the first night and camp and hike on the second night. However, the administrator replied that all cabins were fully booked. I wondered if some people cancelled their reservations because of the typhoon during those days. When we arrived at the site, the administrator knew who I was~ (Actually, because it was my first time camping in Japan, and I was not familiar with camping in Kamikochi, and I was worried about bears, I wrote several letters to the administrators for consultation. They responded very quickly~ So if you have any questions, you can write directly~) Because they knew that I had written a letter to express my needs before, they took the initiative to tell us that there was a cabin that night and asked us if we wanted to stay in the cabin instead. The administrator suggested that we stay in the cabin for both nights, but after discussing with my husband, we decided to stay in the cabin on the first night and set up a tent on the second night, because we both felt that we had brought all the equipment here with great difficulty, and we just wanted to experience camping in Kamikochi once, so of course we had to set up a tent! (To be honest, I was still very afraid of bears at that time XD~)
Why? We thought it would be easier to stay in a cabin on the first night and camp on the second night with hiking. Because cabins have to be checked out at 10 a.m., and extra fees will be charged after the time, and tents have to be checked out at 13:00, so on the first day we took the 15:30 bus to Kamikochi. The ride took about 30 minutes and we arrived at Kamikochi at about 16:00. Then we carried our belongings from the Kamikochi bus station to the camping area. Along the way, we kept exclaiming that we had finally arrived at Kamikochi, which we had been thinking about. It was really beautiful. We kept taking pictures and slowly walked to the reception of the Korihira camping area. So it was relatively relaxing and comfortable to stay in the wooden house on the first night. After we put our things in the wooden house, we hurried to have dinner (because the latest order at Xiaoli Restaurant is 17:20), and then took the time to go to Xiaoli Hot Spring House to take a bath (open until 18:00 and closed at 18:30), so we had plenty of time. After taking a bath and having dinner, we could take a walk to Kappa Bridge, which was super comfortable. There were very few tourists at this time. Most of the tourists staying in the hotel should have gone to the room to rest or have dinner. There were almost no tourists outdoors, which was very comfortable. Plus the color temperature of the sunset is so beautiful, looking at the mountains from afar, it really feels like you are in heaven~
The reception desk opens at 6am, and we planned to start hiking at 7am, so we packed all our luggage the next morning and took them directly to the reception desk to store them (they provide storage services, which require a fee and are charged on a daily basis, and they do not store luggage overnight). So after we checked out, we went hiking without being restricted by the time we had to come back to check out. We first went from the camping area - Kappa Bridge - Tashiro Pond - Taisho Pond and then returned. Some of the routes were divided into streamside and woods. We walked along the stream and walked through the woods on the way back. The whole journey was about 8.5km. Our family of 2 adults and 2 children (8y+11y) took photos and had a picnic. We also went to the stream to touch the water and stack stones. The round trip took about 5.5 hours, which was quite energetic. We originally wanted to take a break to look for a place to set up the tent for tonight and then continue hiking to the end of Myojin Pond (about 6.8km round trip). However, after setting up the tent and having lunch, the kids kept saying that their feet were almost numb and they couldn't walk anymore! We said we would continue tomorrow morning. We originally thought it would be too rushed to leave Kamikochi tomorrow morning, but unexpectedly, the two siblings agreed~ We will get up early tomorrow morning to finish hiking and then leave Kamikochi. So the next day we set out for hiking at about 6:30, and the round trip was about 6.8km from the camping area - Myojin-kan - Myojin Bridge - Myojin Pond (Hodaka Shrine Okunomiya). We took photos as we walked, and sat down to rest and eat when we got tired. It took about 3 hours (we stayed at Myojin Pond for about 40 minutes to take photos). So we returned to the camping area around 9:30, took a rest and packed up the tent, then left Kamikochi and successfully caught the 10:45 bus to Zedo Bus Station. The check-out time must be before 13:00, but since we had other plans later, we thought we had already visited Kamikochi and left according to our schedule.
So we think that the combination of staying in a wooden house on the first day and setting up a tent on the second night is very good. Of course, if we have the opportunity to come here in the future, we will probably just set up tents for all night. If you have experienced the wooden house and the experience of setting up tents here, you can camp here directly. It is really a great enjoyment to travel slowly in the highlands.
The previous article has already introduced the camping area, so this article will introduce the cabins.
On the first day, we stayed in the B-type wooden house, which is a Japanese-style tatami room. After paying, you will be provided with a basket containing a quilt cover, sheets, a flashlight, soap, and keys. The room is equipped with a TV, electric lights, and a small kitchen. Even in the winter, kerosene heaters are provided for a fee. However, the room I booked has a shared toilet outside (there are also rooms with toilets inside the wooden house). So I still feel nervous when going to the toilet before going to bed or getting up early in the morning. I always carry a bear bell with me that keeps ringing... and we go with others and come back quickly. However, the mobile phone reception in the B-type wooden house area is extremely poor, and is very different from the receiving point. But it doesn’t matter since you’re in the mountains! Enjoy this environment. In addition, there are tables and chairs outside each cabin, and you can also make a reservation for the outdoor BBQ area in the cabin area. Check-in time for the cabin is 14:00 and check-out time is 10:00. Late check-out will incur an additional charge. .
As for bears, they must have gradually gotten used to the fact that there are bears. They are indeed not that lucky to encounter one. Plus, there are so many people in the entire cabin camping area, so the probability should be low. Plus, the Japanese seem to be accustomed to it. Bears, monkeys, and deer all live together in the same environment, so they are really calm! Even when hiking, not everyone brings a bear bell!
